The First Irish Kenya Film Festival will offer the chance to catch Irish movies in Nairobi, as part of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.

Screening Time and Costs

10.30: “The Wind that Shakes the Barley” – KES 100
Irish drama directed by Ken Loach set during the Irish War of Independence (1919- 1922) and the Irish Civil War (1922- 1923). Winner of the PALME D’OR at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival.

14.00: “The Secret of Kells”
Oscar nominated children’s animated film telling the story of a young monk Brendan who is learning to be a scribe and how he got the inspiration to complete the world famous Book of Kells. Perfect for children.

17.00: “Once” – KES 300
Irish Musical film (Oscar winner for Best Original Song) tells the story of the musical collaboration of a Dublin busker and a young Czech immigrant flower seller.


Irish musicians will be playing for a short time after the last film.

About
The paintings present various open-ended narratives using Nairobi city by night as muse. Prompted initially by Nairobi’s ominous night-time reputation, Stavros Pavlides wishes to examine, interpret, and comment on perceptions of the city through the highly subjective ‘lens’ of painting.

About the Fragile Strength, the project
Every week, girls from Korogocho slum, have the chance to learn boxing. An initiative organized by BoxGirls, this local association promotes boxing in areas where sexual abuse towards women and girls is very common. BoxGirls main goal: to boost the self-esteem and self-defence of women and girls as well as to make them stronger both physically and psychologically.

The portraits from this urban sprawl of Nairobi aim to capture the fragility and the strength of these young girls; the challenges they face to take part in BoxGirls and the path to success.
