Please note that because there are only limited spaces available, they will be auditioning for particular instruments.

Kwani? Open Mic: We’ve Moved Edition! Mar. 3 2015 @ Phoenix Players
Nairobi’s longest running performance poetry platform, Kwani? Open Mic commemorates its 8th year with a switch to new venue, Phoenix Players. A beloved fixture on Nairobi’s arts and culture circuit, this spot shall provide a relaxed and intimate setting where words will take centre stage.
The inaugural event slated for March 3rd has slam champions Teardrops and Wanjiku Mwaurah blessing the mic as the night’s featured poets with H_Art the Band providing musical delight.

A natural performer and talented scriptwriter, the Flow of My Soul author, Wanjiku Mwaurah goes beyond poetry and has been involved in awareness campaigns for the cerebral palsy condition (art4acause) while playing mentor for many upcoming artists in the field.H_Art the Band
Made up of Mordecai Kimeu, Kenneth Muya and Wachira Gatama, H-Art the Band has created a language best understood not by the mind but by the heart. Blending smooth vocals with poetry, freestyle rap and dance, the trio is making waves in the local music scene.

Join me in celebrating our word journey with writers and spoken word artists including Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor, author of DUST. We will have books and merchandise on special offer all afternoon, with music for your ears by DJ K.lureWe will also be collecting book donations for the fantastic Vitabu Vyetuwhose mission is to improve our reading culture, so do please bring any copies of books you can spare for donating to schools in Elgeyo Marakwet.

The exhibition series Sasa Nairobi is the basis of our work in the field of contemporary art. We aim at working with artists from Kenya that have an advanced and innovative approach and often commission them to produce new work. Since 2008, we have exhibited more than 40 artists, the last being a show by Paul Onditi.Chokora Wear is a contemporary fashion research project that explores how fashion can be used as a vehicle to reclaim a hidden culture or identity. As Chokora Wear enters its 3rd season, this edition focuses on the phenomenon of the “MA-LOOK”, in other terms the “KOOL”, and explores what it means to be cool, feel cool and been seen cool. Just as the previous ones this edition shall unveil different modes of dressing, like official wear, casual wear, street wear, etc.
Maasai Mbili is a community based artist group which was founded in Kibera slum, Nairobi in 2001. The M2 collective is engaged in contemporary art programs as well as in community outreach projects and workshops with children, in which Fine Arts are used as an interactive communication medium between artists and other community members.

Compelling, humorous, deeply human, Strength of a Woman is a story about, the power of determination, hope and the courage it takes to find your voice as Julia’s determination to gain an education and have a better life than her mother had becomes her driving force to change her life forever despite growing up in an environment of poverty and her father’s gambling, alcoholism and abuse.
The film, which won an amazing five awards at the 2014 Kalasha Awards for Best Feature Film, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Lighting and Best Original Score stars renowned Kenyan actors with Rose K. Njoroge taking the Lead role and Laura Leila Wingate, Ashford Kirimi, Sandra Dhacha taking up supporting roles which they expertly and vividly depict.
