Welcome back to the opening race day of the Season!

This Sunday the 17th of August 2014 there are seven races including two feature races.

The first race at 12.50pm is “The Chilli Cup” -1200m and will be followed at 1.25pm, by “The Merchants Purse” – 1800m
At 2.00pm “The Mau Forest” – 1200m will run , then “The Mara Handicap” – 1800m at 2.35pm, then “The Sondu Maiden” 1600m at3.10pm

“The Njoro Maiden” – 1200m will run at 3.45pm.
The last race of the day at 4:20pm will be “The Nzoia Handicap” – 1600m

Baraka Opera Trust Fundraising Dinner Concert – Aug. 22 2014 @ 157 James Gichuru Road

Following the success of its first production ‘Ondieki the Fisherman’, Baraka Opera Trust have a fundraising concert to raise funds for their next opera project.

Date: August 22, 2014
Venue: 157 James Gichuru Road
Tickets are Kshs 5,000/- which include dinner after the concert. All tickets need to be booked and paid for in advance.

There will be music by Rhoda Ondeng Wilhelmsen, Doreen Ziegler, Elizabeth Njoroge, Paul Nduati and others.

Opportunity: National Youth Orchestra of Kenya Invites New Applications, Applications Should be Sent by Sept. 1 2014

The National Youth Orchestra of Kenya invites new applications from young musicians aged 13 to 20 who can demonstrate commitment to music and leadership potential.
Closing date for receipt of applications is 12 noon on Monday 1st September 2014. Selected Applicants may be called to audition at Strathmore University in Nairobi on 6th or 7th September 2014. Previous applicants are allowed to re-apply if they had previously applied and auditioned before December 2013.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE IN THE KNYO?
Anyone under the age of 20 can participate in the KNYO as long as they meet the following requirements;

Essential Requirements
1. Anyone aged 20 and under as at December 2014.
2. Citizens or resident in Kenya and planning to remain in Kenya for a minimum of two years from January 2015.
3. Committed to the purpose of forming a national group representing Kenyan youth, and wholly sympathetic with its aims and challenges.
4. Have previous experience in music performance
5. Able to commit adequate time for attendance at KNYO courses and to regular music practice
6. Provide a reference from their music teacher.

Additional Requirements
1. Able to play chosen instrument* at a high technical level
2. Able to read music at a high level
3. Have music theory knowledge
4. Own or have regular access to their chosen instrument*
5. *Chosen instrument can be any of the following:

Flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, horn, trumpet, cornet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, orchestral percussion, violin, viola, cello or double bass

Exhibition and Documentary Festival: Silent Memories – The unbroken chains

On the occasion of the United Nations International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, Alliance Française presents a photo-text exhibition on the abolition of slavery in East Africa and its legacy on contemporary Kenyan society of slave descent. The exhibition has been put together by a team of researchers from the National Museums of Kenya, led by Patrick Abungu, Senior Curator of the newly rehabilitated Shimoni Slavery Museum and Heritage Site.

Alongside the exhibition, a series of documentaries on slavery, slave trade and its legacies around the world will be shown. The documentaries have been availed by the International Centre of Research on Slavery and UNESCO.

Sankara

Exhibition by Gilah Yelin Hirsch and Performance by Michel Ongaro & Senta Lain, Aug. 15 2014 @ Sankara Nairobi

The Sankara Nairobi will be hosting an evening on 15th August from 7:30 pm to “meet the artist” – Gilah Yelin Hirsch along with live music from Michel Ongaro and the Senta Lain band.

Gilah’s original works will be on display at Sankara on their their 7th floor during the Songambele Week.

Songambele Week is an annual event that takes place in Kenya with proceeds of the events going to charity. This years event will take place from August 11-17, 2014.

Meet the Artist: Gilah Hirsch, Aug. 14 2014 @ Kuona Trust

Meet world renowned painter Gilah Hirsch at Kuona Trust on the 14th of August 2014 from 2pm – 4pm.

The artist is famed for her unique work as well as facilitating various successful projects including art therapy for children. During the session at Kuona Trust, she will be talking to artists about her work and answer questions on the same.
