Kuona Trust is delighted to invite you to the opening of WHERE BOOKS GO TO DIE, an exhibition by one of our artists, Jackie Karuti, opening on 13th March at the Goethe Institut, Nairobi.

The exhibition replicates a library scene set in a dystopia world inspired by the four elements Earth, Air, Fire & Water. These four elements are believed to be the forces that govern existence for they hold immense power to not only build but also destroy. The symbolism of the elements is translated into a series of smaller installations that depict the state of most libraries as seen in Nairobi as well as in most parts of the world.

About the Artist
Jackie Karuti is a visual artist working in the fields of painting, performance art and installation. Her paintings depict a world of opposites set within a black and yellow palette. With her gradual embrace of new media and immateriality, Jackie has incorporated a conceptual and experimental artistic approach to her work through her performance pieces and installations which collectively focus on themes such asgender, identity and urban culture. Jackie has exhibited and participated in workshops in Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and the USA. She also writes and has collaborated in various photography projects.

Synopsis

The National Museum of Kenya invites you to view a dedication painting during the Celebration Of International Women’s Day on March 8, 2014.

The masterpiece titled Wangari Maathai, A Lady of Commitment by Joseph Bertiers stands tall at 6ft x 8ft.

In honouring Maathai’s activities & achievements the masterpiece becomes a great source of inspiration for change and reflection on the economic, political and social achievements of women.

You are encouraged to find some time during the women’s week starting Saturday March 8th to visit and spend time with the painting. It is displayed at the Nairobi National Museum‘s lobby on ground floor.

The painting will be on display at the museum for a minimum period of one year.

Time: The National Museum is open daily from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm

TEN CITIES is coming back to Nairobi. After last year’s pumping warehouse concert in April, it’s time for another episode. Therefore we are inviting TEN CITIES participants from sub-Sahara Africa creating a unique night-out experience Nairobi hasn’t seen before. Expect diverse and raving DJ sets from Afrologic(Lagos), Trust The DJ(Johannesburg), DJ Satelite(Luanda) and Just A Band (Nairobi) that will navigate you through genres like Kuduro, Kwaito, Afro Beat, Dub, House, Techno and much more.

TEN CITIES is a music and research project that brings together musicians and writers from ten cities in Africa and Europe. The project initiates music production and details the unwritten history of club culture in Cairo, Johannesburg, Luanda, Lagos and Nairobi as well as in Berlin, Bristol, Kyiv, Lisbon and Naples. TEN CITIES is a process, focusing on creating and producing, carried forward by travels and visits. During this process, the project aims to create networks that are open and involves a constantly increasing number of participants.

Borrowed Life Synopsis
Melissa feels trapped, being married to what she considers her ‘slow’ husband. She gets even angrier when her younger friend and neighbor buys property, while they are still being held back by her husband’s “poverty mentality.”

She eventually tries to “invest” behind her husband’s back; however when the politician from whom she buys prime land demands for more than she can give, Melissa finds herself thrown into a web of secrets, and nothing could have prepared her for the downward spiral her life gets into, as her unrelenting quest to move on up turns deadly.
