Exhibition of new works by Mary Ogembo
About
Mary Ogembo‘s work is inspired by the African woman. She depicts the beauty and daily activities of the woman, and overlooks the negative stereotype placed on the African woman.
Her paintings are very rich with vibrant Earth colors, usually associated with Africa and the background pretty much relates to the subject and brings about the state of the environment. Her subject forms are exaggerated in some areas, which give the paintings a naive look.
Mary Ogembo’s paintings have been collected by The National Art Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, The Standard Chartered Bank UK and Casoria museum in Naples Italy.
She has also held successful exhibitions outside Kenya in the following countries; France, USA, Egypt, Canada, Finland, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Tanzania, Zambia, India, Germany and Lithuania.

Haunted by his doppelganger the Night Runner – a naked, mad and mythical being who, in popular rural Kenyan imagination, runs from house to house casting spells – Mochama will carry you along on his journeys through Nairobi.
His is a declaration of love for the city-in-the-sun, after the sun has gone down.

SAUTI ZA MABINTI
Young women artists come together in a two-part production bringing to stage a diversity of artistic skills in performance poetry, spoken word, femcee, hip hop, rap, neo-soul and afro-fusion.
Kike Tele, an initiative that collects and tells stories about women, presents ‘The Edge of Womanhood’. The show is a performance piece scripted poetically that explores different stereotypes of women revealing the fallacy of stereotypes.
Performers include: Mwende Ngao, Rein, Raya, Amare Poete, Namatsi Lukoye.
Sauti za Mabinti is a platform to empower and promote young female artists.
‘The Phenomenal Women’ will be emceed by Anitah Raey, poet and presenter with Ghetto radio on the NiajeNiaje.
Performers will include: Her-She, Latisha aka Laty, Shikow Femi One, Samantha M-ill, Vivian Kenya, Basilica Wairimu ‘Taamic’, Lilian Ayanga aka Pluto and Judy Ogake aka Sugar.
Kuldip Sondhi’s Award winning play BEACH ACCESS, was declared the best winning play in 1997 of the BBC Playwriting Competition and subsequently recorded on location in Mombasa and transmitted to over forty million people worldwide. A year later Beach Access was put on stage for the first time Featuring Fiona Sax Ledger the BBC Producer who had produced the radio version.
Synopsis
Beach Access is a hard hitting commentary on corruption, poverty and land grabbing.
The story centers on Helga, (Stephanie Maseki) a retired Germany tourist who falls in love with Hamisi (Muscat Sayye) a beach boy vendor. While looking for an alternative route, the boat capsizes as the boatman (Edward Wangama) tries to find an alternative route as the usual beach access had been grabbed by the area chief (Anthony Mbithi) in collaboration with Mr. Seth ( Ashik Yusuf), a private Developer.
Kulola Mlaghui plays Lawyer Hassan, who is trying to unravel the mystery behind Helga’s death and the saga behind the closing of the beach access road. To cement their heinous relationship, Ndirangu the Area chief wants his daughter Cynthia (Sylviah Namussasi) to link up with Seth’s son Prem (Awwab Mohammed).

The cast list includes the who’s who of Mombasa theatre circles. Rumar Amar who appears as the chief’s secretary. Silvanus Omondi and Dianna Mwende feature as Beach boys.
Beach Access is directed by Keith Pearson, the Theatre Company Managing Director, and it is produced by Hillary Namanjia, the Theatre Company’s Coast Manager.
Beach Access has been published as a book by Awaaz Magazine and the official launch is scheduled for Friday 7thMarch at the Reef Hotel 6.30 p.m, Saturday 8th March at The Little Theatre Club at 7 p.m. and 22nd March at the Reef Hotel at 6.30 p.m. The launch will coincide with a performance of the play by The Theatre Company featuring Mombasa-based, top notch theatre artists.
The entrance fee of kshs 1,500/- at the Reef Hotel will include a cocktail party. The performance at the Little Theatre Club will cost kshs 500/-. An autographed copy of the book will retail at kshs 500/-.
Proceeds will go towards Coast Hospice, a palliative care clinic that takes care of and supports patients with life limiting conditions such as Cancer, HIV Aids , and chronic Heart, Liver and Kidney conditions.

SYNOPSIS
Kenyans are excited by the discovery of oil in Turkana, the cradle of mankind, because of oil’s potential to accelerate economic growth in the country. But not everyone is as enthusiastic about the oil discovery. The biggest, unresolved issue in the country of Turkana is water, which has led to some of the world’s first climate wars.
Ekal a Turkana warrior living in Todonyang, on the border of the Kenya and Ethiopia, carries a gun wherever he goes, as his community is constantly fighting over water and grazing lands with the Daasnach tribe from Ethiopia. Access to clean water is also a pressing concern for residents living near the oil sites in Nakuklas.
With increasing climate change, as a result of our reliance on oil to drive industry, water could soon become the new oil in terms of importance and conflict
