Exhibition: Exodus by Allan Simba, Feb. 8 – Mar. 3 2024 @ Alliance Française.

Opening: February 8, 2024

Venue: Alliance Française

Time: 6.30 PM

About

Allan Simba holds a Diploma in Fine Arts from the Kenyatta University. His work is a result of continuous experimentation. He uses an eclectic mix of techniques distilled into a style referred to as ‘furism’. This was coined by the French curator, Floréal Duran, to describe Allan’s art as influenced by the fury of living.

The artworks in ‘Exodus’ are a conceptual observation of the world in flux. The constantly changing view of ourselves, having to understand and re-understand us and our interaction with our environment. The works symbolize the ephemeral nature of our views.

Dates: Until March 3, 2024

About

This photo and video exhibition immerses us in the multiple facets and paths of self-accomplishment in Kenya today.

It captures, visually and through personal stories, the quest for self-accomplishment as tied to questions of wealth, power, authority and respectability. It shows a variety of expressions for the art of being accomplished, from marrying and raising children to engaging in community work to investing in business, art, or politics. Being an accomplished man or woman requires navigating multiple, conflicting values and expectations situated at the intersection of ethnicity, race, class, age, generation, gender, and religion.

About

Diab has painted migrants most of his career, though tragically, he recently found himself with first hand knowledge of being evacuated and becoming a refugee. He lost all his worldly possessions in the fighting which engulfed Khartoum.  Now living in Madrid, Diab’s latest works have a new depth and context.  In his own words; “…my main subject, it remains the delicate situation of women; a constant theme of mine for almost 20 years now. Women bearing the brunt of migration, navigating the infinite landscape of Sudan whilst the men kill each other. Husbands and sons are lost and the women must support the full responsibility of the future and the sustenance of their family. For me they are a symbol, an icon of our diversity, of our social variety and our unity. Their colourful and patterned aesthetical garments (toub), their curves and gestures, their stance when faced with the flat land, lost and in an insecure space. The explosion of violence always leaves our women more vulnerable to the most putrid and heinous acts’.  These works carry a new poignancy, each figure portrayed with the body language of grief, not only for the subject to bear but also for the artist to use in expressing his own desolation.  There is a tremendous sadness in many of these works, whilst they remain hauntingly beautiful .

The show, ‘Reflections of War: Agony of Displacement’ comprises a huge range of work Diab has produced since his evacuation, including black and white prints relating to the war, oil paintings of the more iconic Diab genre and Monotypes.

About

Circle Art present a series of new works, more ambitious in scale and experimental techniques exemplifying not only Dickens technical prowess, but also, the expanding material and visual vocabulary of his work. Known for his sculptural tapestries of woven aluminium and three-dimensional garments in the same medium, Dickens engagement with his chosen medium reflects his interest in the way colour, texture, pattern and iconography imbue ordinary objects with meaning and identity.

Dickens has participated in numerous group exhibitions locally and internationally and has an ever-growing base private and institutional collectors. In 2022, he was one of the artists representing the Kenya Pavilion at the 59th Venice Bienalle.
