The Youth Theatre of Kenya is proud to present an original musical entitled, “Matumaini”.

Matumaini directly translates to “Hopes” in English. And this is exactly what this story tells. Set against a huge dumpsite within the slums, we follow an array of stories and a band of characters who have been tossed aside and forgotten by society…until the music changes their lives. Watch as our characters battle against drugs, gang violence, poverty and the near-impossible odds as they strive to be something more. Matumaini is a relevant, heartwarming story which aims to highlight the power of the human spirit.

This is based on the lives of many of our Ghetto Classics members and some of them will be taking part in the performance.

About
Blues and reggae music with the Kenyan singer-songwriter, Yubu, backed by his band ‘The Downhome Blues Gang’. Citing his influences as Bob Marley, James Brown and Hugh Masekela, Yubu’s music has not only been shaped by Kenyan and African sounds but also those of the gritty streetes and neighbouroods of Memphis, Tennessee, where he lived for sometime.

From the strum of his guitar, the conviction of his vocals, the catchy nostalgic melodies to thought provoking lyrics, get ready for some hip-shaking, finger snapping and head nodding with Yubu.
