Exhibition: “Our Bodies, Our Stories” with Xavier Verhoest, Oct 1-30 2011 @ Nairobi National Museum
Our bodies tell our stories – Opening Sat 1st, 3-6pm
Since 2005, the German Development Cooperation through GIZ, Art2Be (a group of Kenyan and international psychologists and artists) and TICAH (Trust for Indigenous Culture and Health) work together on innovative approaches of self-expression that improve communication in HIV-affected families and improve resilience and acceptance. Body Map involves painting a life-size representation of one’s body onto canvas and using pictures, symbols and words to represent the path that one has taken through life.
This exhibition brings together a selection of Body Maps made by Kenyans.
All of the paintings in this exhibition are self portraits telling each Kenyan’s story about happiness, rights, health, illness, stigma and strength as they journey through their life in the age of HIV/AIDS.

Paul Onditi was born and grew up in Kenya but left after college for Germany where he joined the Offenbach University of Arts. He sees his ways of expression as a combination of African nature and a European acquired knowledge in Arts.
His paintings take us to strange places. They would almost look scary, but in fact, an odd quietness hangs over them, a kind of dead calm that disturbs and attracts. For a long time, he has sought a way to express the human condition and its inherent conflict, deeply affected by the tragedy of the soul in the Christian tradition.
His use of black and white refers to good and evil, the confrontation between light and dark, our inner conflict: “That is the reason I paint and sculpt. I do that to capture moments and happenings in my own life, my own self”.
Uncertainty is at the core of his practice, the loss of control is an integral part of his work, his mental maelstrom does not have any grip on the rational, are we in a dream or in the lab of a crazy alchemist trying to alter our mind with his hallucinogenic vision ? These dreams are like fantasies; these nightmarish visions show that painting can still be mysterious in Kenya.

Background of The Theatre Company
TTC has developed original performance work and trained performers throughout Kenya since 1999. As well as its work with written pieces, TTC has been instrumental in the development of the devised work technique. Voice of a Dream (2002) KigeziNdoto (2006), Githaa (2006 and still showing), Sauti Kimya (2009), Irodha Irodhi, (2010) and Shungwaaya (2011) were developed through the technique of engaging the experiences of the performers. All of our work is extremely mobile, flexible and proud of its Kenyan identity.
All TTC projects are open to all performers in Kenya, regardless of ethnicity, religion, gender or sexual orientation.

Tango Festival: LamuLonga 2011, Nov. 30 – Dic. 4 2011 @ Lamu
Wed 30 Nov – Sun 4 Dec – LamuLonga!
We will spend 4 nights in Lamu, a World Heritage Site, a centre of Swahili culture, an emerging artistic and creative base for artists from around the globe. Lamu’s charms need little introduction—the days are free to immerse yourself in Lamu town, Shela beach, Manda island, or choose to sail by traditional dhow around the Lamu archipelago. We will lodge at various houses and hotels (including The Fort itself) just footsteps away from the beach in Shela and we will have a Milonga at The Fort or other locations for each of the four evenings in Lamu. Flight back to Nairobi on Sunday, leaving Lamu at 15:00. Limited to a maximum of 101 participants.
Sun 4 Dec – Leave Nairobi
Farewell Milonga in Nairobi on Sunday evening on the terrace at Ole Sereni Hotel that is close to Nairobi International Airport. Everyone free to continue on with own itinerary or to return to respective home destination.
