Classical Evenings Club – Kevin Munyi and the Nairobi Chamber Chorus
This Thursday, the Classical Evenings Club plays host to two amazing performances. 22 year old classical guitarist, Kevin Munyi and the well acclaimed Nairobi Chamber Chorus.
Kevin Munyi started his musical journey at the age of 7 when he undertook the cello. At age 11 he got his first keyboard and taught himself famous classical piano pieces, this is when his love for the classical music was sparked. A year later he took up the guitar after having listened to 2 Spanish brothers called Samuelo and Lucio playing Flamenco. He began playing in an Italian gospel group in his local church called the Neo-Chatecuminal Way, as an accompanying guitarist for the cantors. Over the years he has adventured into different genres with a keen emphasis on classical and flamenco, due to their technical mastery. He has compiled a repertoire of over 400 songs of different genres.
The Nairobi Chamber Chorus was founded in October 2005 by Ken Wakia, with the mission to enable young Kenyans to participate in a high quality musical forum from which they could build their careers or expand their realm of knowledge and interest in the arts. The chorus also offers a cultural exchange platform on which visiting musicians can interact with upcoming Kenyan musicians. They have performed at many charity and corporate events travelling extensively in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Nairobi Chamber Chorus has performed together with world-renowned musical companies, including the Guildhall Orchestra, London Adventist Chorale, Cape Town Opera and UK based Opera House. In 2009, they entertained an audience of more than 4000 people alongside the world-renowned a cappella Voces8 during the 2009 Safaricom classical music festival. And last year performed again at the same festival alongside the famous Soweto String Quartet to an audience of 7000. Most recently in February 2011, they performed Vivaldi’s “Gloria” at the British High Commissioner’s residence with the London based string quartet – the Bridge Quartet and also held a joint concert in April with a renowned finish Acapella group ‘Philomela’.
