AUDITIONS FOR THE CONSERVATOIRE’S 2011 MUSICAL – KISMET

ABOUT KISMET

Kismet is one of the Arabian Nights tales. The story tells of a very poor and very cunning poet whose daughter falls in love with the Caliph (king). The musical is based on a play by Edward Knoblock and its libretto was written by Charles Lederer and Luther Davis. The music was written by Robert Wright and George Forrest based on a theme composed by Alexander Borodin
WHO CAN AUDITION? Anyone from age 7!
AUDITION CATEGORIES
One can audition for one of the following roles:
• Main part
• Chorus/ supporting cast
• Dancing

AUDITION DETAILS
MAIN ACTORS
These people take the parts that are crucial to the plot of the story. The ability to sing well is of great importance.

Audition Time: From 10:30 am (registration closes at 12: 30 pm)

Requirements
• Sing a short song of your choice in any style without any accompaniment.
• Prepare a 3 to 5 minute one-man act based on any theme you wish.

CHORUS/ SUPPORTING CAST
These people sing the chorus parts of the musical and also do some minimal acting e.g. in crowd scenes. They also do some dancing.
Audition Time: From 2 pm (registration closes at 4 pm)
Requirements
• Sing a short song of your choice in any style without any accompaniment.

DANCERS
These need to be accomplished dancers. They will do some acting but will not do any singing.
Audition Time: From 2 pm (registration closes at 4 pm)
Requirements
• Prepare a 3 to 5 minute dance routine in a style of your choice and with your own selection of music. We will provide a CD player but you need to provide your own CD with your selected music.
• You do not need to audition to sing.

Described as the greatest ‘South of Sahara, North of Limpopo, Larry Liza has touched tens of thousands of lives with performances across churches, weddings, NGO, etc. functions across the nation and beyond, and is probably best known for his poem TOYOTA.

Larry is a regular writer of comments and letters in Kenyan dailies.

Larry has represented Kenya beyond the waters through his work on Flamingoes and Kenya’s Dandora Damp Site, and is keen on working with the society in achieving the MDG’s esp. through Green Energy.

A 4 week course, classes on Tuesday evenings 7:00-9:00pm, to introduce the fundamental techniques of social tango that are posture and axis, stepping, pivoting, cadence, partner connection and floor navigation. Numerous base figures will be used along the way to establish and strengthen the above fundamental techniques, examples include ochos, corridas, pausing, salidas, cruzadas, and giros. In short, this course introduces you to the improvisational tools of musical expression and navigation that you need to be able to dance in a “milonga” (the place/event where social tango is danced).

Prerequisite: either completed (at least once) a Tango Initiation Session (next one is on Sat 3 Sep, from 10:00am-12:30, see: www.patamango.com/classes ) or otherwise has previous tango experience.

The African leg of Bombino’s tour has been cancelled – apologies for any inconvenience. Tickets refunds will be made at every ticket sale outlet. We’ve just received this message from the organisers:

“Beetle Entertainment regrets to inform its fans that due to unforseen circumstances, the AFRICAN TOUR FOR BOMBINO LIVE! HAS BEEN CANCELLED.  Bombino will not be performing at Johannesburg Arts Alive, in Harare Zimbabwe or in Nairobi Kenya.  Ticket refunds will be made at all ticket sales outlets.  We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused”.

On his way back from Johannesburg Arts Alive! Bombino will give Kenyans an Exclusive performance at theTribe Poolside.

For centuries, the desert town of Agadez has served as a converging point for the great camel caravans driven by the Tuareg that link West Africa with North Africa and the Mediterranean. Born in 1980 at a nomadic camp near this dusty outpost, the young guitarist and songwriter Omara “Bombino” Moctar was raised during an era of armed struggles for Tuareg independence and violent suppression by government forces. Bombino’s electrifying jams capture the spirit of resistance and rebellion while echoing with guitar riffs reminiscent of fellow Africans Tinariwen and Ali Farka Touré not to mention rock and blues icons such as Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker and Jimmy Page. Already a superstar in the Tuareg community, with the release of Agadez on Cumbancha Discovery (April 18th in Europe and April 19th in North America), Bombino’s stature as one of Africa’s hottest young guitarists will be revealed to the world.

Just thirty years old, Bombino has earned renown throughout the Sahara for his guitar wizardry, and his bootleg tapes are traded among music fans in the region like illicit treasures. Some of Bombino’s early and live recordings have made their way into the hands of enthusiasts in the West, and in 2006 Bombino traveled to California with the band Tidawt to record with Keith Richards and Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones. He even served as Angelina Jolie’s guide to the region when she visited a few years ago. His Casanova good looks, enigmatic charisma and natural charm have endeared him to his fans, and his compelling life story and socially conscious songs led him to be the subject of an award-winning new documentary film, Agadez, the Music & the Rebellion, that is currently making the rounds of film festivals in the U.S. and Europe.
