Founded in 2011 in Nairobi Kenya, SLUM FILM FESTIVAL is a pilot film festival showcasing films made by and about slums. This innaugural project focuses on the images around the slums in Nairobi with a vision of expansion to include films from around the world in the future editions.

A positive initiative for the slums and its artists, the Slum Film Festival seeks to raise positive attention and help to shift the public perspective on the slums and the people who call them home.

SFF intends to become a platform for film production out of the slums. With awareness and awards, it will help give local film projects a leg up to reach both International and local film festival circ..

SFF kicks off on August 6th 2011 and will run through August 23rd, in both Kibera and Mathare!

MISSION: Changing our belief system is central to making any real and lasting change; we are working to shift the global picture & perception of slums through social transformation utilizing media and the arts.

The Slum Film Festival is a joint project of the Spanish Embassy (Kenya), Hotsun Foundation, Slum-TV, AECID (Spanish Agency Of International Cooperation) in collaboration with the Nairobi Art Center.

The Rift Valley Festival will be an intimate gathering of local and international artists, combining traditional African roots and global styles.

It will provide a stage for established as well as developing talent, creating a fusion of musical influences with the very best independent acts. We will also create a platform for the exposure of local arts, crafts and culture.

The aim is to make a real difference to local communities by raising awareness and money to aid environmental improvement and community regeneration in Kenya. All profits from ticket sales will go directly towards supporting grassroots projects.

Maisha Yangu is a performance about life in the streets. It is a story depicting a young girl who is forced to live in the streets and how she manages to survive. The actors are 4 children and 2 young adults. The show went on a tour around Sweden from April 7th to May 7th 2011. These children from Dandora, even though they are not professionally trained, have an excellent natural ability to communicate through drama and dance.

As serious as the story sounds, it involves lots of laughs and scenes that urge us to make the lives of street children in Kenya better. The story reminds us that we can’t move forward until we take care of our children.

Written and Directed by Ms Kajsa Dahlstrom – “Mama Kajsa” – actress and president of Globetree, a Swedish NGO. Globetree invited Maisha Yangu to tour Sweden for one month this year and has been invited back for another tour next year.
