A documentary that chronicles the deployment of a platoon of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan’s Korengal Valley. The movie focuses on a remote 15-man outpost, “Restrepo,” named after a platoon medic who was killed in action. The goal of the film is to make viewers feel as if they have just been through a 90-minute deployment. Hetherington was killed in April 2011 while covering the Libyan war

The documentary highlights current participatory research activities in the Tana Delta being undertaken jointly by local and international researchers under Kenyan Wetlands Biodiversity Research Group (Kenweb). The discussions will focus on how best to utilize the natural resources for sustainable development in the Delta.

At TEDxPeachtree, bioethicist Paul Root Wolpe describes an astonishing series of recent bio-engineering experiments, from hybrid pets to mice that grow human ears. He asks: isn’t it time to set some ground rules? Paul Root Wolpe examines the ethical implications of new science — genetic modification, neuroscience and other breakthroughs that stretch our current philosophy to the breaking point. He’s the chief bioethicist at NASA, among other appointments.

Increasing heaps of unwanted and poorly disposed electronic products such as refrigerators, computers, mobile phones, television sets, all contain harmful or toxic substances that, if not well managed, present serious adverse impacts on the environment and human health. Is Kenya in a position to handle the growing heaps resulting from digital revolution, lifestyle changes all arriving in the country?
Knowledge is power and the people must be educated and be made aware that the use of electronics may eventually turn against them and the future generations, if strongest measures and policies are not put in place to control trade and disposal of E-waste.
The speaker will highlight the magnitude of the current and future impact of E-waste in Kenya.

This anthology of poems and short stories is the culmination of a joint literary project by AMKA – Space for Women’s Creativity – and Goethe-Institut Kenya.
For over 3 years, a literature forum has been held in the library of the Goethe-Institut on the last Saturday of every month. Over this time the participants wrote poems and short stories, which were then read or performed, and subsequently discussed and critiqued by their peers and invited literature professors and established writers. This provided an opportunity for the young writers to improve their skills and become better producers of the written word.
This anthology is the first collection of a selection of writings presented by the young writers and discussed during more than 30 literature forums. AMKA and Goethe-Institut are proud to officially launch this collection of hitherto unpublished works. Some of the writers will read and perform their own pieces during the launch.
The launch will be in the form of a moderated panel discussion with the following panelists: Anna Mwangi, Elizabeth Orchardson-Mazrui, Mshai Mwangola and Tom Odhiambo (Moderator).
