Why? This TEDx event gives parents, teachers, students and the larger community a glimpse into our collective future and a space to engage in open, exploratory dialogue, to understand the world our children will live in and to explore creative ways to adapt to it.
What? This Saturday we will be showing two videos of talks from the renowned TED conferences followed by a casual discussion. TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The annual TED Conference invites the world’s leading thinkers and doers to give the talk of their lifetimes in 18 minutes. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. Lino and Wood Cut Workshop ** (30th June – 3rd July)
Become familiar with the history and art of lino and wood cuts. This will enable participants gather experience with the medium and make small editions without a printing press. Applicable to both beginners and advanced levels – with Mathias Muehle
Art Workshop (11th – 14th July)
Focuses on improving the artist’s skills rather than finished work. It involves a critic session and practical application of the different approaches to an artist’s work – with Anthony Okello
Photoshop Workshop (12th -15th July)
Providing the basic yet essential topics required when working with Photoshop such as the tool box, palettes, layers, file types recognized by Photoshop, resolution and size, and color balance – with Dennis Maingi
Discussion on Art, Space & Presentation (15th July)
A summary of discourses that have been taking place within the context of contemporary art from Africa in the last 5-10 years – with Jimmy Ogonga
Introduction to kiln formed glass (slumping and fusing) (16th -17th July)
Basic intro to the technique of making or using existing molds, melting recycled and window glass in a kiln and experimenting with materials that can be included in the process. All Artists will make at least 2 small pieces – with Danda Jaroljmek
Sculpting (Finishing) (18th – 21st July)
A thematic process specializing in relief by exploring human figures which are semi-abstract. Handling of tools, concept or theme and process – with Mosoti Kepha
Figure drawing and painting Workshop (19th – 21st July)
Quick drawings, movement, reverse drawing, long poses for painting on canvas – with Patrick Mukabi

SAX IN THE CITY is simply a celebration of the Saxophone as an instrument! It seeks to bring different Sax players together on the same stage to explore diverse genres and musical biases through unique horn-based arrangements.
We intend to hold the concert series on a quarterly basis with the inaugural one taking place on June 25th, 2011 at The International School of Kenya auditorium from 6:30pm. This particular edition consists of an All-Kenyan Saxophone cast namely: Chris Bittok (Alto), Don Ouko (Alto), Jack Anduuru (Alto) and Edward Parseen (Alto/Tenor/Trumpet).
Future editions will bring together Saxophone players from the region, continent, and other internationally acclaimed acts!

Slum Film Festival is a joint project of Embassy of Spain in Kenya, AECID (Spanish Agency of International Cooperation for Development), Slum TV and Hot Sun Foundation, with the collaboration of the Nairobi Art Centre.
THE CONTEST is open to young people between the ages of 18-30 years with an interest in art and filmmaking. Artists from informal settlements (slums) are encouraged to enter. Professional artist (artists who have e…xhibited their works commercially), including those based in slums, are not eligible.
03/ CATEGORIES
1. Slum Film Festival LOGO. These are going to be digital submissions, designed using any computer design software. The final submission must be saved as JPG, less than 500MB in size and emailed to mercy@hotsunfoundation.org or info@slum-tv.org by the deadlines below. Please add the following title in your submission e-mail: “Slum Film Festival LOGO”.
2. Slum Film Festival POSTER. These submissions should be hard copy (paintings, drawings, sketches, etc) and should be dropped at either: Hot Sun Foundation offices in Kibera, Slum TV offices in Mathare or the Embassy of Spain at CBA Building in UpperHill by the deadlines below.
04/ COPYRIGHT
The COPYRIGHT of each submitted POSTER and LOGO artworks belong to its author. Upon entering the contest, the selected and awarded designers cede the exhibition, publication and copy rights of the pieces to Slum Film Festival and they grant Slum Film Festival the rights to modify, use as is, the winning artworks. The copyright of the winning Artworks will belong to Slum Film Festival and will be considered ‘work for hire’.

07/ HOW TO SIGN UP
– Collect application forms at Hot Sun Foundation, Slum TV offices or at the Embassy of Spain.
– All participants must fill in an application form with their personal information and specify the category in which they want to compete. Only one proposal will be accepted for each category (individually or collectively).
– Participants must submit the a brief explanatory text of the piece (300 words max.)
– Submitted materials must be originals and cannot have been published anywhere prior to the announcement of the contest results.
– Any action taken by a participant violating these conditions will result in immediate disqualification.
– Assessment criteria: The design should meet the vision of Slum Film Festival.
– This contest is open to artists whose works have not been exhibited commercially.
– The artwork submitted must not be offensive in any way.
