The Embassy of Spain in Nairobi is happy to invite you to the following;

Artist talk with Irene Izquierdo, who will present her latest work: “The potential of art in context. Exploring ideas of identity and alternative commemoration in Nairobi”.

In this event, programmed in the framework of the Hispanic-Kenyan Cultural Forum, Izquierdo will also explain her artist practice, with which she tries to alter and question the accepted normality of our everyday actions, environments and perceived identities.

At the same time, one of the collaborators of Izquierdo’s work in Nairobi, the young Kenyan music group will offer a small performance of their songs composed for this occasion.

Three Kenyan artists and four Bauhaus University Alumni try to fathom together the issues of public space and commemoration in Kenya.

Conversations in Silence is a five month collaborative research project by three Kenyan artists: James Muriuki, Kevo Irungu, Deqa Abshir, as well as four Bauhaus University Alumni: Dusica Drazic, Irene Izquierdo, Karolina Freino and Sam Hopkins.

To what extent is there a collective memory in Kenya? What is the role of the state in shaping this narrative? Does this differ from how memory is created on a societal level? Does popular culture act as a commemorative tool?

The exhibition presents the results of the artists’ research and lines of enquiry: Working experimentally in various media, and often in public space, the artists seek to address those critical questions relating to issues of memory in the Kenyan context.

The workshop and exhibition is co-curated by Potash (Matathia Charles Anthony) and Sam Hopkins.

Jazz for Peace featuring Singer / Pianist / Composer Rick DellaRatta, considered by many to be one of the finest Jazz Artists performing today, will perform a special Benefit Concert for The Empaash Oloorientito Conservancy Trust to be held at the Nairobi National Museum in Nairobi, Kenya.

This concert will also raise awareness and address the problems facing the Masai Mara, home to the largest migration of animals in the world. EOC believes that the region’s rich natural resource and cultural wealth can be used to expand cultural and eco-based tourism, and provide a significant economic and social development in the local communities. Having performed with everyone from Dizzy Gillespie to Paquito D’ Rivera, Rick DellaRatta is now considered by many to be one of the finest Singer/Pianists performing today and one of only a handful of Jazz Artists who can make a successful musical presentation to a large audience without having to abandon the true art form of Jazz. His unique and original piano playing and composing has been compared in print to Chick Corea, Bill Evans, McCoy Tyner and Thelonius Monk while his signature vocal sound and style has been likened to Chet Baker, Billie Holiday, Michael Franks and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Recently, Rick DellaRatta was included in the Book “Jazz Singers” as one of the top Jazz Vocalists of all time and by The Foundation Center in their list of the top musician philanthropists of our time along with Bono (U2), Elton John, Peter Gabriel and Sting.
