Art Nairobi and Le Rustique are pleased to welcome ‘Shabu’ Mwangi 2nd solo exhibition.

Born in 1985, the artist lives in Mukuru slum. Deeply rooted in his community, Shabu has always been working as an activist and artist, he is the co-funder of Wajukuu art center and is a member of Art2Be, an organization improving the lives of marginalized groups using artistic and therapeutic methods.

Most of Mwangi’s works are moments, which passed without any acknowledgement from within the system and in public view.
It is his reaction on behalf of the minority who exist in the absence of the majority.

Shabu Mwangi gives us a tale of the inside, a broken silence where the faces and the bodies do not need any narrative interpretation. The beauty and the importance of these works proceed from a personal experience and from fundamental emotion, these are shades of light and dark. Like an incessant path between strength, weakness and pain, these works put us in the place of the artist and the viewer, a constant reminder that questions related to our existence are fundamental.

Thika is also popular for its delicious grilled pork popularly known as ‘pork choma’. Travelers using Thika Road stop over at the town for this delicacy. There are numerous butcheries in the town selling both uncooked and ready to eat spare ribs. Thika is also a very clean town. Pigs are reared in farms outside the town, they are then slaughtered and brought in as meat. THE ONLY PIGS YOU WILL FIND IN THIKA TOWN ARE DEAD ONES !

This exhibition is not about pigs, it is about people. It is about our society, our politics, the economy. It is about morality and the lack of it, it is about greed and filth and disregard of the rule of law. Impunity and the ‘you should know people ‘attitude. It is about corruption and the selfishness in our society. And most of all, it is about INTELLIGENCE, which surprisingly pigs have!

Just like my town and indeed the country as a whole, my work is in constant change as I seek new ways and techniques of expression. Big crowds of people gathering together for a common goal are reminiscent of the big lines we experienced on March 4th when we voted. Patterns and repeat motifs signify the trend in our politics. A campaign poster with ridiculous manifestoes and promises. A trend in society where men display military style organisation when it comes to their favourite soccer team or their drink. Trends which the international media might regrettably mistake for violence. Hence the need to distinguish between the real and the counterfeit, from the vicious looking crocodiles imported from China and the fish hanging dead in a hangman’s noose to the pig prints on the blankets of Fulilia Hotel, each piece is connected to the other in one way or another. THE PIGS OF THIKA TOWN serve as the start of a new direction in my work.

The Alliance Française exhibition walls are resplendent with African Art from 8 Francophone African countries: The Ancient Kingdom of Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon, and Mali.

The Arts of Africa constitute one of the most diverse legacies in the world. The objects on display are part of the commercial collection of Aberahaman Njingou and Mounchigam Arouna from West Cameroon.
The diversity of ritual and ceremonial masks on display highlight the importance of masks as mediators between the living world and the spiritual world in traditional African societies.

Geert Goiris, born 1971 in Bornem, Belgium, teaches at the Royal Academy of Arts in Antwerp. He studied photography at the Sint-Lukas Higher Institute for Visual Arts in Brussels and graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts as well as the Higher Institute for Fine Arts in Antwerp. His work has been exhibited all over the world, such as Hamburger Kunsthalle, Kunstforum Basel, Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane and Nouveau Musée National de Monaco.

According to Eva Wittocx, his photographs reflect on the fundamental tension between perception and reality. In his work, time and space disappear in the interplay of form, abstraction, light and depth. The images of architectural spaces and intriguing landscapes with traces of human presence are often very alienating. In his recent work figures have started appearing, suggesting open narratives with threatening undertones.
