“These works are based on my life in Kenya. In the past artists used to say: ’My art is my life.’ and nowadays they say: ‘My life is my art.’ These paintings are about the latter and this is the first time I take this approach – reflecting on my life. I found it is a really big theme that takes my work from ‘private’ to the ‘public’ and political. I would like to develop it more in the future.” Nadia Kisseleva

About
Bringing art to those in the greatest need in the Kianda section of Kibera started in 2008 with the creation of the Art in Kibera program at the St. Aloysius Gonzaga secondary school. The program was created by Charles DeSantis and Margaret Halpin as an annual immersion program which provided opportunities for smart, beautiful and important students of this school, as well as younger children in the Red Rose Primary School, to create art.

After several years, and with a desire to make this program sustainable, the program transitioned to a Kenyan for Kenyan model in which Kenyans assumed ownership of program management and delivery. For the past six years, Art in Kibera has been managed and taught by Artistic Director, Alex Njoroge, a well-known Kenya artist, allowing for the program to be delivered monthly as opposed to a two-week immersion once a year.

With a desire to have a larger outreach in the informal community of Kibera, in 2013 the Kibera Art Institute was started at the old school location of St. Al’s in Kibera. Housed at The Foundation of Hope, Artist in Residence, Faith Atieno and Director, David Odhiambo Dinda, deliver art creation and education programming to children from ages 4 to 22 on a weekly basis.

In 2015 the Sanaa Foundation was founded and registered as a Community Based Organization with the Kenyan government to ensure the sustainability of these offerings and that Kibera children and young adults have the opportunity to share their creative voices and visions.

This exhibit is a culmination of more than eleven years of hard and heartfelt work to create an environment both in the schools and the community of Kibera to provide access to art education. It is an expression of creativity and empowerment.

One Off Gallery is immensely proud to be hosting an exhibition titled ‘Fanta Orange Na Mkate Nusu’ of Peter Ngugi’s latest oil paintings. In this series of works Peter explores the incentives offered to motivate the Kenyan public to vote.

Each work depicts groups of people surrounded by the ‘goodies’ used to influence the ballot box. Meticulously executed, these paintings are surely on their way to international markets.

Lake Basin Art Group (LBAG) once again holds it’s annual exhibition at Nairobi National Museum. The artists, who come majorly from Kenya’s lake region of Kisumu import a taste of originality in the museum galleries like a breath of fresh lake breeze. This year, in their exhibition titled ‘Ripples from the Lake’ they are joined by guest artists from other water regions around Eastern Africa.

Visit the museum and enjoy a visual walk of the lakes-capes and activities of the lake people.
