About
The work of Wolfgang Tillmans occupies a prominent position in the contemporary art world. Ever since his first exhibitions and publications in the early 1990s Tillmans’ artistic approaches have continually developed. He is constantly redefining photography both as an image and as a material artefact, be it in the museum space or as an object on the printed page. His work is based on his never-ceasing curiosity, his intensive research in preparation, and a constant testing and advancing of the medium and its technical and aesthetic potential. His visual language derives from precise observation that reveals a deeply human approach to the complexity of the world. Familiarity, empathy, friendship, and intimacy are all visible and tangible in his pictures.

Tillmans’ approach can be seen as an appeal for freedom and an invitation to meet the other fearlessly and with open-minded curiosity. For Tillmans, acceptance of the fragility that determines us as individuals and that plays into our relations with each other is not a weakness – it is a great strength. Mistakes, ruptures and fragility are frequently impulses that lead to the development of new processes. They indicate the imperfection of our lives and yet also open up surprising perspectives on their material nature.

Fragile provides a comprehensive overview of the many-facetted and different forms of artistic expression in the work of Wolfgang Tillmans, from large-scale prints to sculptural objects, video projections, and music, to his curatorial work in making the exhibition. This selection for this ifa-touring exhibition comprises more than 200 works from 1986 to 2017. It includes framed and unframed photographs in various formats, and also his table installation truth study center, video works and numerous publication projects. Like all of Wolfgang Tillmans’ exhibitions, each venue of the tour will use an installation that reacts to the specifics of the exhibition space and its architecture and environment.

#TillmansNairobi is an exhibition by Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen (ifa), in cooperation with Goethe-Institut Nairobi.

‘IRREPLACEABLE’ is an exhibition celebrating endangered species that are crucial to the continuity of life on planet Earth. He chooses to create this series of collage art to raise public awareness of the threat posed to the animals he’s created by human activities which have been the cause of pollution, climate change, degradation of all eco-systems and finally the potential extinction of not only animals but human beings as well.

Artist Biography
Evans Maina Ngure’s first inspiration was his father who showed him how to draw cartoons and cars. He was fortunate to have had art classes up through Kenyatta University where he majored in painting. It was at KU that he was first encouraged to create art using ‘unconventional materials’ which naturally led him to start working with what other people called junk.

Today he works with an assortment of found objects, such as zippers, spare parts from cars, buttons and used belts from Gikomba. He continues to ‘paint’ however his canvases are also filled with junk items. He also creating wearable art such jewelry, wind chimes, collages, back packs and purses. But his current exhibition at BIEA focuses on the creation of creatures, both wild and domestic which he designs with more ‘unconventional materials.”

Evans has exhibited all over Nairobi, from the Village Market, Dusit D2 Hotel, Nairobi National Museum, K1 Flea Market, Nairobi Gallery and ISK. His artwork is also available to see on Facebook (evans maina Ngure) and Instagram (Evans Ngure).

The exhibition Indulgence, curated by Violet Nantume and Nyambura M. Waruingi, is the third iteration in a series of conversations that had begun in 2015 and led to the exhibition Eroticism and Intimacy: Face, Places, and Paths at Under Ground Contemporary Art Space in Kampala in 2016. Now, Indulgence takes the artists and curators from Kenya and Uganda out of their comfort zones, building on our interpretations of genders, sexualities, and pleasures in their particular artistic expressions. It seeks to illuminate the relationship between art and its ability to interrogate, using local knowledges, and reflecting on issues affecting Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity (SOGI). Regionally and artistically diverse, the participating artists have been investigating genders, sexualities, and pleasures in their own locality drawing from their experiences to inform their artistic practice.

The exhibition will be broadened by several events: the exhibition opening on 5th April 2018, several walkabouts with the curator and an artist’s talk in conversation with Awuor Onyango on 19th April 2018. The exhibition will travel to Johannesburg, South Africa later this year, supported by !Kauru Contemporary Art From Africa.

Lisa Milroy is fascinated by material transformation and how one substance turns into another, whether it’s fabric into clothing, ink into words, clay into ceramics, or pigments into paintings. Milroy is also interested in imaginative transformation – how a painting turns into an experience that can touch or move the viewer.

Handmade: Paintings by Lisa Milroy brings together a selection of Milroy’s work from the past ten years to explore the subject of ‘looking and making’ and transformation. The paintings in the exhibition focus on the relation between the hand and eye, and the interplay between thinking, feeling and making. The exhibition features a range of work that reflects the diversity of Milroy’s approach to painting, including oil on canvas, interactive paintings and 3-D paintings.

An interactive exhibition produced by the Biodiversity Programme of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) with the support of the European Union and Région Réunion.

A chance to discover more about these spectacular sea mammals: history, anatomy, migration, feeding habits, myths… It aims to raise awareness on this migratory species that knows no borders and is a symbol of the health of our oceans.

These ocean giants can grow up to 18 metres and weigh 40 tonnes. They are known for their haunting and melodic songs and for breaching the water with amazing acrobatic abilities. Humpback whales migrate farther than any other mammal on Earth and can travel around 5,000 kms between their breeding and feeding grounds.
