This photo exhibition by the Franco-American photographer, Ania Gruca, examines the strength, the beauty and the unique place of women in a fast-changing Zanzibar. It is a visual representation of women as strong yet subtle members of Zanzibar society today who are caught between wanting to be active, educated and part of the political world and the pressure to fulfill traditional female roles in a mainly Islamic society.

Contemporary elections involve ever-more modern technology. They are meant to protect what have become the fundamental principles of elections: the secrecy and singularity of the individual’s vote, the transparency of the ballot, the independence of the institutions supervising the elections.But these increasingly sophisticated elections come at a cost: when technology goes wrong, suspicions are quickly aroused.Have new technologies made elections more free and fair? Has this new apparatus transformed electoral behavior? The speakers on this panel, each one a specialist, will address these questions with regard to their own field of practice: from election polls, to electoral observation, to the organisation of elections.

A wall can be seen as a tool to defend, but also to divide. It is something to expose and reveal, and yet, at the same time to limit and discriminate. Walls which were once there to gate us from the rest of the world have lost their relevance. Today, we see culture and knowledge traversing invisible walls to form fruitful global collaborations.

Invisible wall is an interactive light-sound-physical art installation, created by current Kuona Trust artists in residence, Lena Pozdnyakova andEldar Tagi who make up the Zwo.

The exhibition purposes to offer a different type of spatial experience where the audience becomes part of the installation and process of creation through interactive action.

SILENT CONVERSATIONS
This body of work is a continuation of the ‘Conversation’ that has dominated Maggie Otieno’s work for the last 7 years. She is engaging her audience to converse with the Elders and others: the sculptures created from a 100 year old red Indian teak wood (Railway Sleepers) and new and recycled metal. She uses this mix of complementary, seasoned, old and the new materials to symbolize societal inter-intra age synergies, dialogues and linkages as well as to arouse conversations within her audience.

To produce this body of works, Maggie has been inspired by looking at people having conversations, whether she is part of these conversations or not. ‘I get caught up in the expressions, and gestures that I see. I have translated these distant conversations into my work and they therefore form a part of a continuous conversation within the audience that interacts with the works … The works on Block Board are ‘ALL MY THOUGHTS’ – A series of new works embodying the conversations that go through my mind as I interact with my materials, eliminating and adding onto elements at my discretion. It is about what I choose to remember and that which I choose to forget, and these too, are my Silent Conversations’

Maggie has taken part in numerous exhibitions, workshops and residencies both in Kenya, East African region, Algeria, Nigeria, Netherlands, USA and UK.
