A note for a Smile

Charity Event in Aid of Palestinians in Gaza: A Note for a Smile, Nov. 27 2014 @ Lord Erroll – Runda

A note for a SmileA Note for a Smile: Music & Art to raise humanitarian aid for Palestinians in Gaza

The six-week conflict this summer left more than 1,870 dead and thousands injured, homeless, and traumatized. The conflict had a particularly devastating toll on Gaza’s youngest and most vulnerable. Many of the affected children have suffered serious injuries that cannot be treated in Gaza due to limited medical capacity caused by the ongoing blockades, and others suffer from severe traumatic disorders. They need our solidarity and support.

A group of us working in various humanitarian and development capacities in Nairobi have decided to organize a charity event to encourage the community to contribute to the work of Palestinian health institutions to restore dignity and hope to the Palestinians in Gaza.

All funds raised during the evening will go towards supporting the activities of Makassed Hospital in Jerusalem, as well as to the Gaza Mental Health Community Center.

During the event we will hold a silent art auction showcasing a number of world-class artists from the contemporary East African art scene, who have kindly contributed their work to raising funds for this cause. The impressive line-up of artists includes Fitsum Behre Woldelibanos, Eltayeb Dawelbait, Michael Soi, Anthony Okello, Paul Onditi, Shabu Mwangi, John Silver, Justus Kyalo, Dennis Muraguri, Yassir Ali Mohammed, Mariantonietta Peru and Kamal Shah.

There will be music throughout the night with live sets from some of the best musicians in Nairobi who have accepted to perform for the cause, including Idd Aziz, Teto, Jahm, Afro Simba and Mutinda.

Designers’ fair (featuring Otenge, Chilly Mango, Madafu Moxie); a raffle with a chance to win exciting prizes; food and drinks (cash-bar), and more surprises await you…

Please note that your ticket number will be your registration number for the art auction.
Bids will be open from 17:00 to 21:00!

Date: 27 November 2014
Venue: Lord Erroll, Runda
Time: at 17:00
General Admission: KES 2000

The children will be demonstrating the skills that they have acquired during the Anno’s Africa intensive workshops and the One Fine Day weekly arts clubs.

ANNOS’S AFRICA & ONE FINE DAY
ANNO’S AFRICA, was founded by Bee Gilbert and Andrew Birkin, in memory of their son, Anno, in 2006. The purpose of the UK registered charity is to give children in the poorest slums in Kenya, the chance to discover their as yet unexplored artistic potential and the opportunity to lead imaginative and self-determined lives.

Anno’s Africa, works in partnership with ONE FINE DAY e.V., an NGO founded by Marie Steinmann-Tykwer and Tom Tykwer in Berlin in 2008. These two charities, have combined forces in a programme which offers intensive creative workshops for children and young people living in the Nairobi slums of Kibera and Mathare.

More then 700 participants are free to choose from various arts disciplines, according to their preferences: traditional and contemporary dance, ballet, drama, creative writing/storytelling, music, circus skills, and visual arts. European mentors teach side by side with Kenyan artists and performers, who then continue the lessons in once weekly arts clubs, for the rest of the year.

Continuity is at the heart of the philosophy and commitment from ONE FINE DAY e.V. and ANNO’S AFRICA. With regard to these weekly art clubs, as the firm belief is that young artistic talents should evolve constantly. And these regularly scheduled classes give the children, who live such difficult and challenging lives, an exciting bright spot once a week. Currently 24 such creative weekend clubs are taking place in all disciplines through out the year.

The positive results are unequivocal and the children are all making significant progress not only in the arts but in their academic achievements as well. And all of these talented kids are finding not only self-confidence but also great joy in their lives through their new found artistic skills and the development of their imaginations.

Viva con Agua (VcA) is a charitable organisation based in St. Pauli, Hamburg (Germany), campaigning for clean drinking water and human sanitation worldwide. Since its existence VcA together with the United Nations World Food Program ensured access to clean drinking water to more than 500.000 people. Besides the social projects VcA also always tries to initiate links between the people in the project countries and the donors using the universal language of music, art, and football.

During the trip to Kenya the local musicians Octopizzo, Sarabi, and Onejiru will work with Marteria and Maeckes from Germany. The aim of the trip is to create a song together as well as produce a documentary photobook with the journalist Marcus Staiger and the photographer Paul Ripke and a cinematic documentary from the view of a Kenyan director, focusing on the particular approach and method of this social and cultural cooperation.
