ENO announces Mini Operas, a world-wide, online search for composers, writers and film makers that will seek out emerging opera talent of the future from across the world. Three competitions to find future stars of all the components of creating an opera will be launched online allowing everyone to submit entries for one or more categories.
Live from 26 March 2012, this groundbreaking and innovative worldwide search for new talent will seek to create the future of opera. The hunt for exciting visionaries will take place entirely online in conjunction with Mini Operas partners: Vimeo, Soundcloud, BFI, British Council, Classic FM, Sound and Music and The London Film School.
The competition will run in three rounds dedicated to each discipline with renowned talent judging the entries. Artists with strong connections to ENO; Will Self, Terry Gilliam and Nico Muhly, will judge submissions for each relevant category. One participant will provide inspiration for the next as each round will be activated by ten final entries from the previous stage.
Existing and budding writers will be invited to create a script based on three example story lines, provided by Will Self, AL Kennedy and Neil Gaiman. Later in the year, the ten scriptwriter finalists will be put forward and composers will have the opportunity to compose an original score to these unique stories. From here, ten composer finalists will be picked by composer Nico Muhly and ENO Music Director Edward Gardner. The competition will then open up for film makers to construct their vision for the complete Mini Opera. The film section will be judged by film legend and director of ENO’s The Damnation of Faust, Terry Gilliam.
Terry Gilliam said, ‘Opera is really, really hard to do well. I know. I want people to find it out for themselves. I’ll be judging, and I want to find future stars who can work with this ridiculous, stupefying, insane, wonderful artform. Good on ENO for trying to find anyone mad enough to have a go.’
The finale to the contest will take place at the BFI, in autumn 2012. Terry Gilliam will pick one winner from each category. Selected films, scripts and soundtracks will be showcased at the event, and one person from each category will be chosen to be mentored by leaders in their field: BAFTA Award winning composer, writer and director Jeremy Sams, who has worked extensively in theatre both in the UK and New York and whose credits include Chitty The Musical, Amour, and The Water Babies; Composer Nico Muhly, whose opera Two Boys was premiered at ENO last year; and Leo Warner, whose productions include Waves and War Horse at the National Theatre and who has also produced work for the National Theatre of Scotland and the Metropolitan Opera.

The National Museums of Kenya is inviting young Kenyans to help promote the role of art as one of the critical ingredients in the definition of the Kenyan heritage and identity.
Young Kenyan artists between the ages of 18 – 25 years old are invited to participate in a National Visual Arts Competition whose theme is “Experiencing Kenyan Heritage through Art.”
Participating artists will take part in regional competitions that will be held in selected museums around the country in August 2012. Three winners from each region will be selected for the national competition at Nairobi National Museum in December 2012.
The grand prize is a one week visit to London museums and galleries with organized tours to art studios and institutions giving the winner a chance to share and exchange ideas on art and heritage.

This month Nairobi Now teams teamed up with Blankets & Wine, to give you the chance of winning a few tickets for their first wonderful concert of the year.

After the successful launch of the Shela Hat Contest 2010 we would like to welcome to our next artistic competition, to be held on 11. February 2012. The partisipants are supposed to design funny hats from used materials picked up
from anywhere such as paper from cement bags, pipes, bones, shells, plastic, wires, palmleaves, fabrics, coral etc.
Minimum age for all contestants should be 18 years

After preselection a limited number of 120 hats will partizipate the final competition. The judges will estimate the artistic talents and artisan quality of the partizipants shown in their hats. To complete the day there will be extra

The Google Photography Prize is a photography contest for students around the world.
The Saatchi Gallery, London and Google are looking to offer students a chance to showcase their work on the worldwide stage.
Contest winners will have their photos viewed online and also win great prizes: 100 people shortlisted will get a Samsung Galaxy Nexus phone; 10 finalists will see their work exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery, London; one winner will go on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to an amazing destination with a professional photography coach.
Submission is open till 31 January 2012. There are 10 different and inspiring categories to choose from. The submission process, rules and all details can be found on the official site.
The GoDown is calling for artworks from visual artists based in Nairobi for the annual Manjano competition. The exhibition is running under the theme “Nairobi”. The works should be submitted under the categories of practicing and student artists with cash prizes being awarded for the top 3 positions in each category. Deadline for submission of works is 27th January 2012. The Exhibition will open at the Village Market on 16th February 2012 and run until the 26th of February.
Artists’ expressions in paintings, sculptures and mixed media are invited on the theme “Nairobi” for the annual Manjano Exhibition. The theme aims to draw out artistic expression that explores the diverse aspects the city of Nairobi – its people, the city environs and urbanscapes, the colours, textures and moods of Nairobi, the activities and lifestyles of its inhabitants, feelings the city evokes, etc. Here are the rules for the submissions:
1. A maximum of 2 pieces of work may submitted for selection in the Manjano Exhibition
2. The works should have been executed within the course of last year (i.e. since January 2011 and not any earlier).
3. Works may be submitted under any of the following 2 categories: Student or Practicing Artist.
4. Selected works will hang in the Manjano Exhibition and shall be judged. Cash prizes will be awarded for the top 3 positions in each category.
5. Deadline for submission of works is January 27 2012. Works should be submitted at the GoDown Arts Centre, Dunga Rd, next to Giro Bank.
