Love Crimes of Kabul, In Dari & Pashto with English Sub-titles, 71 minutes, Tanaz Eshaghian

Jailed for running away from home to escape abuse, for allegations of adultery, and other “moral crimes,” the women of Afghanistan’s Badum Bagh prison band together to fight for their freedom. Love Crimes of Kabul follows three young prisoners as they go to trial, revealing the pressures and paradoxes women in Afghanistan face today, and the dangerous consequences of refusing to fit into society’s norms. Their defiant actions come to be seen as threats to the very fabric of society, and their acts of self-determination as illegal. Will life outside prison enable these women to experience the freedom they desire?
Filmmaker Tanaz Eshaghian brings us into the lives of these “outsiders,” and we watch as teenage romantics learn to become steely-eyed negotiators in an effort to secure their future, brokering their freedom with courage, charm, and skill.

Defying cultural norms and family expectations, 22-year-old Heba Afify takes to the streets to report on an Egypt in turmoil, using tweets, texts and Facebook posts. Heba’s words bear witness to the heady optimism of a country on a path to self-determination, the toppling of a dictator, the difficult transition towards democracy and the celebration of a cultural shift where a younger generation inspired a country to “lead themselves”.

The creativez are hosting the first ever, virtual continental collaborative Afrika Eye Film Festival discussion this Friday evening at iHub with our friends African Interactive in Bristol -UK all on Film and Digital Media The theme is The Moving Image

Other than discuss how Digital can expand the audience for the African moving image we will also explore new forms of film production, funding, distribution models and opportunities on collaborative projects between Kenyan and British film makers. All this will happen in a Unique format-depending on where you are on today we -the audience will get to interact with both panels in Bristol and in Nairobi’s iHub via an intergrated weblink

German Documentary: Foreign, Nov 2 2012 @ Alliance Francaise

Watch the free screening of German independent documentary “Foreign” by Miriam Fassbender in the closing day of the Kenya International Film Festival.

“Foreign” was entirely shot in Africa. The movie follows a young man from Mali on his way from south of the Sahara as he heads for Europe, hoping to cross into the continent illegally. Earlier this month, Baghdad International Film Festival awarded “Foreign” for “outstanding storytelling, camera work, a great sensibility and ability to keep close to the protagonists, and great music that has an organic relation to the story…”.

“Foreign / Fremd” will play as the closing film of KIFF 2012 public screenings at Alliance Française Auditorium, Loita / Monrovia Streets, on Friday @3.30 p.m.
