Synopsis
A young aspiring actor from upcountry Kenya dreams of becoming an accomplished actor one day, and in pursuit of this and the chagrin of his brother and parents, he makes his way to Nairobi the city of opportunity. He quickly understands why Nairobi is nicknamed Nairrobery as he is robbed of all his money and belongings and left alone in a city where he doesn’t know a soul. Luck, or the lack of it, brings him face to face with the city’s criminals and forms a friendship with a small time crook who takes him in. He is quickly drawn into a world of crime as he struggles to pursue his dream of becoming an actor. Keeping the two worlds separate proves to be a challenge for him as he trudges on in this unknown world called Nairobi. This is the story of a young man who despite all odds trudges on in search of his dream. His drive and soft spoken nature are his best resources. His determination is encouraging and he is a true testament that what stands between us and our goals is us.

With her new film, Writer/Director Katrin Ender introduces the fun and the lifestyle around a sport that has taken the world by storm.

After just 12 short years, kitesurfing has moved into the limelight and will replace windsurfing at the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016. “We all flew a kite to get kitesurfing into the Olympics and unbelievably the kite has landed in Rio!” says Sir Richard Branson, one of the IKAs Olympic Ambassadors who also recently set a new world record by kitesurfing across the English Channel.

Katrin Ender has eight years experience of working in the film industry and has earned numerous international awards. Her work has been highly commended by world-class professionals, including Peter Scoones (BBC Blue Planet & Planet Earth) and David Doubilet (National Geographic). She has an in-depth knowledge of Africa and is fluent in four languages, whilst also working as a creative for ad agency Ogilvy.

The film was shot at Che Shale, an exclusive beach hideaway on the edges of the Indian Ocean, which also hosts the biggest annual kitesurf competition in Kenya. “Kitesurfing is so visual, exciting to watch and very attractive” – Steph Bridge, 3-time KiteRacing World Champion.

Documentaries: From Namibia with Love and Odd Number, Jul. 18 2012 @ Goethe

Odd Number comes from South Africa and sheds light to the gangster culture deeply rooted in the slums of Cape Town. The film shows one particular ex-gangster’s life and struggles.

Laura Meriläinen-Amaumo worked on both films and will be present at the screening.

The Sinema Hot Sun Showcaseoffers an opportunity for film lovers to interact with creative youth from Kibera showing what they do best. The screening programme comprises award-winning “Kibera Kid”, “Mututho”, “One plus One”, “Choices”, “Majukuma2, among others. Kibera TV will present its documentaries based on slum innovation and environment management. A demonstration of how to record audio for film will be held, making this event a unique showcase of Hot Sun’s activities.

Hot Sun Foundation is a charitable trust registered June 2007 in Nairobi, working with youth in slums since 2000 in Filmmaking and training. Hot Sun Productions provides quality media services at reasonable rates. Kibera Film School offers innovative, hands on video training in creative story telling. The school trains youth in scriptwriting, camera work, editing, directing and producing. Kibera TV, the African inspirational TV is an online channel that is a voice for everyone in the Kibera community and beyond.

This is a very funny Italian movie – playing with the stereotypical differences between North and South of Italy. Highly recommended!

The story of a southern postal employee unhappily transferred to the north of Italy – A self-pitying northern hero dispatched to the Mezzogiorno. The wife of the film’s hero is the leader of a thinly disguised Northern League vigilante patrol with a sense of civic duty so strong she will not let her son accept a balloon from a street trader unless it is accompanied by a valid tax receipt. When her husband is posted south of Naples she buys him a flak jacket.
What he finds is something at odds with his prejudices. The people of the hilltop town of Castellabate are admittedly incomprehensible but they are friendly, honest and live in a place of heart-stopping natural beauty.

Peppino’s idealistic concept is that his future lies in politics and he becomes a Communist, rises in the ranks, eventually even visiting Moscow to meet with Stalin, and returns to Baarìa to help the people in their struggle for land reform and socialism. His dream of being a successful politician is as fragile as it is unattainable.

The director of the film, Giuseppe Tornatore, was born in Baarìa which is Sicilian slang for Bagheria. This is an autobiographic epic of three generations in the Sicilian village where he was born.
