Synopsis
Dora-Heita features a street-wise magistrate battling a corrupt establishment. The new magistrate is known as Dora Heita, the ‘Alley-cat Magistrate’, on account of his debauched lifestyle. In his unique way which was contrary to the samurai code, he cleans up the town of the yakuza bosses and the courtiers who are in cahoots with them. He is a one of a kind hero people long for today.

13th Lusophone Film Fest POSTER
The thirteenth edition of the Lusophone Film Fest Nairobi will be on the 28-Nov as of 5 pm at the Goethe-Institut Nairobi, showcasing two Brazilian shorts about urban art and a feature film about the liberation struggle of Angola:

– Walls Upon Us (Brazil, 2013, Chico Toledo)
– Women are Heroes – Brazil (Brazil, 2009, JR)
– Njinga, Queen of Angola (Angola, 2013, Sérgio Graciano)

Recognised with international awards at film festivals around the globe, the cinema from the Portuguese-speaking world is still mostly unknown to the general public. This 240 million people linguistic community is a thriving one, promoting over 80 film festivals and cinema awards every year, with movies mostly consumed in the respective countries.

The Lusophone Film Fest is a showcase of the diversity of film production in the eight Portuguese-speaking countries spread across 4 continents. The festival presents multiple works (documentaries, animations, shorts and feature films), in sessions of several films from the different countries.

The event is free of charge.

Synopsis
The family of Hirayama Wataru, a business corporation executive, consists of 4 members, his wife, Kiyoko, eldest daughter, Setsuko, and second daughter, Hisako. Hirayama sympathises with Fumiko, the daughter and only child of his close friend, Mikami, who without the consent of her parents has set up house with her lover. But he does not agree to his own daughter Setsuko’s sudden request to marry a young man named Taniguchi. Hatsu, the owner of a ryokan style hotel in Kyoto which Hirayama patronizes, has comes across a marriage proposal for her daughter, Sachiko, and has come several times to Tokyo for consultation. Sachiko sympathises with Setsuko and helps to push along marriage plans for Setsuko before Taniguchi is transferred to Hiroshima. Hirayama vows he will not attend the wedding ceremony, but his wife finally persuades him to attend. On a trip to Kyoto, Hirayama hears from Sachiko that Setsuko is saddened by the cold attitude assumed by her father. Hirayama feels sorry for is daughter and feeling somewhat sheepish over his previous obstinacies, he heads for Hiroshima where his daughter is living her married life.

SYNOPSIS:

Bosnia. Rwanda. Kosovo. Sierra Leone. Pakistan. Just a few of the world’s humanitarian and political crises in the past years. Whether the result of war or nature, these disasters devastate populations and cripple health systems. Despite the immense dangers and difficulties of the work, one organization, Doctors Without Borders, has continuously intervened at these front-lines of overwhelming human need.

Filmed in the war-zones of Liberia and Congo with unprecedented access to the field operations of Doctors Without Borders/ Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) , Living in Emergency: Stories of Doctors Without Borders follows four volunteer doctors as they struggle to provide emergency medical care under extreme conditions.

Two volunteers are new recruits: a 26 year old Australian doctor stranded in a remote bush clinic and an American surgeon struggling to cope under the load of emergency cases in a shattered capital city.

Two others are experienced field hands: a dynamic Head of Mission, valiantly trying to keep morale high and tensions under control, and an exhausted veteran, who has seen too much horror and wants out.

Amidst the chaos, each volunteer must confront the severe challenges of the work, the tough choices, and the limits of their own idealism.

The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) is a group of states which are not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. As of 2012, the movement has 120 members and 17 observer countries.

The Non Aligned Movement (NAM) Film Festival in Nairobi is organized by the countries members of the troika of this organization, Egypt, Iran and Venezuela as part of the commemorative activities for the transfer of the presidency of NAM to Venezuela.

Through these movies we want to highlight the development of the film industry as well as to show the cultural diversity of the people of the South.

The Gay Kenya Trust in partnership with the Goethe-Institut Kenya will be organising the fifth annual Out Film Festival to showcase LGBT-themed films from Africa and across the world. The screenings will be followed by discussions of the central themes and the challenges faced by the LGBT community in Kenya.
