About

Obange is a term in Luo language for what was thought to be an evil spirit that would deliberately plague a family with misfortune. The belief in Obange in Luoland is not as strong as it once was, although there are still some believers. Its literal meaning in the Luo language is “disturbed person”.

The series of performances and accompanying exhibition at Maasai Mbili are based on research by Kevo Stero on how you can map a city through the eyes of an Obange.

NAI-NI-WHO? FESTIVAL

Nai Ni Who Festival: A Celebration on Nairobi Neighborhoods, July 16 – Sept. 30 2016 Various Hoods Around Nairobi

NAI-NI-WHO? FESTIVAL
Festival Kick-Off: July 16, 2016
Venue: Kibra, DC Grounds

Participating Neighborhoods in this year’s festival: Kibera, Kamkunji, Kilimani and the South B-‐Mukuru

About Nai Ni Who Festival
Once again, Nairobi is set to host Nai Ni Who, what has now become an annual citywide festival. The festival is scheduled to kick-‐off on Saturday July 16, 2016 and run over the next two months into September 2016.

An initiative of The GoDown Arts Centre, Nai Ni Who? showcases the diverse cultures of Nairobi as the City county’s various neighborhoods transform into platforms for sharing Nairobi histories and stories, and celebrating its people and their neighbourhood assets and cultures.

Since it launched in 2013, the festival has catalyzed residents of Nairobi to engage with both the positive and challenging aspects of the city, with a view to expressing pride for and ownership of their city. Nairobians who have participated in previous festivals have made such comments as follow: “ Nai Ni Who helps us to look at people for who they are, to feel the city as it is, to not judge the people and places of Nairobi, ” and “it brought all Nairobi-‐ans together and it promoted our Nai culture.”

This year, as in previous festivals, The GoDown Arts Centre has been engaging in pre-‐ festival meetings with residents in the various neighborhoods, planning the events and programs for the celebrations. Nai Ni Who 2016 will include action in the neighbourhoods of Kibera, Kamkunji, Kilimani and the South B-‐Mukuru. There will also be activities in the City Centre, comprising free city walking tours in the weekends, led by youthful guides who have undergone a training on the histories and stories behind the streets and buildings in the CBD.

Using multiple publicity strategies such as street billboards, flyers and social media, with illustrations drawn from the distinctive style of Nairobi artist Michael Soi, the festival aims to amplify awareness around identity and belonging in the city.

Already lined up by the neighbourhoods are parades, concerts, clean-‐up activities, markets and sports events. Children from Nairobi’s city schools will also have a chance to know their city through visits organized for them by the Nai Ni Who festival to the National Park, the National Museums, Karura Forest and other destinations.

About The GoDown Arts Centre
The Centre, which has been operational for the past 13 years has contributed immensely to the advancement of a robust arts and culture sector in Nairobi. It is the force behind another significant Nairobi arts event -‐ Manjano – the annual Nairobi arts exhibition and art prize for artists resident in Nairobi.

The children will be demonstrating the skills that they have acquired during the Anno’s Africa intensive workshops and the One Fine Day weekly arts clubs.

ANNOS’S AFRICA & ONE FINE DAY
ANNO’S AFRICA, was founded by Bee Gilbert and Andrew Birkin, in memory of their son, Anno, in 2006. The purpose of the UK registered charity is to give children in the poorest slums in Kenya, the chance to discover their as yet unexplored artistic potential and the opportunity to lead imaginative and self-determined lives.

Anno’s Africa, works in partnership with ONE FINE DAY e.V., an NGO founded by Marie Steinmann-Tykwer and Tom Tykwer in Berlin in 2008. These two charities, have combined forces in a programme which offers intensive creative workshops for children and young people living in the Nairobi slums of Kibera and Mathare.

More then 700 participants are free to choose from various arts disciplines, according to their preferences: traditional and contemporary dance, ballet, drama, creative writing/storytelling, music, circus skills, and visual arts. European mentors teach side by side with Kenyan artists and performers, who then continue the lessons in once weekly arts clubs, for the rest of the year.

Continuity is at the heart of the philosophy and commitment from ONE FINE DAY e.V. and ANNO’S AFRICA. With regard to these weekly art clubs, as the firm belief is that young artistic talents should evolve constantly. And these regularly scheduled classes give the children, who live such difficult and challenging lives, an exciting bright spot once a week. Currently 24 such creative weekend clubs are taking place in all disciplines through out the year.

The positive results are unequivocal and the children are all making significant progress not only in the arts but in their academic achievements as well. And all of these talented kids are finding not only self-confidence but also great joy in their lives through their new found artistic skills and the development of their imaginations.

Nyumba Kumi

Exhibition: Nyumba Kumi by Kevo Stero, Sept. 18-29 2014 @ Kuona Trust

Nyumba Kumi
Nyumba Kumi exhibition by artist Kevo Stero of Maasai Mbili Art Studio opens on Thursday 18th September 2014 at the Kuona Trust gallery.
The artworks on show are a collaboration between Kevo and several artists that he works closely with at the Maasai Mbili (M2) space in Kibera.

Opening: Thursday 18th September from 6 pm
Exhibition Dates: 18th–29th September, 9 am – 5 pm Daily
Venue: Kuona Trust, Likoni Lane off Denis Pritt Road, Hurlingham

Exhibition Concept
The ‘Nyumba Kumi’ project is an initiative by the Kenyan government to improve security in the face of increasing insecurity in the country. Under ‘Nyumba Kumi’, landlords are required to establish estate associations to register themselves as well as their tenants. It calls for the vetting of tenants by ensuring an accurate record of what they do for a living so as to establish that they are not criminals or linked to terrorist activities. Providing this information is not an option but an obligation. In the face of rising global terrorism the government deems that effective collaboration between residents and security personnel is the most effective tool in the prevention of attacks as well as building cases against terror suspects. It sites other countries such as neighbouring Tanzania where this exercise has worked.

The artist explores this initiative from the perspective of the slum dwellers of Kibera. As a resident of Kibera, Kevin has conducted widespread research in the area to gather the thoughts and reactions to the ‘Nyumba Kumi’ exercise. Some of the questions he chose to interrogate include- Does the ‘Nyumba Kumi’ apply in Kibera? How is it implemented there? What is the impact if any on the residents? What is the impact on you? Is it bound to succeed or fail?

His intention is to provoke the audience to think deeper into their own perception of the project and its impact. He provides insights into a community that few people really understand. This community also dwells in the cosmopolitan city, Nairobi, which the government so desperately wants to protect. However, the residents of Kibera were probably not a priority in the list for consideration when this initiative was developed.

This exhibition challenges the passive nature of society when faced with various socio-economic and political challenges. Kevin hopes to trigger a more proactive approach to the analysis of situations and deeper thought into the solutions provided for the challenges by the leadership/government of the day.

The curator will be renowned artist Mbuthia Maina.
