The Old and the New in Kenyan Afrofusion Music
Renowned Afro-fusion musicians like Eric Wainaina, Atemi and Suzanna Owiyo have given birth to a new crop of younger musicians like Sautisol, Patricia Kihoro, Elani and Lele Ngoma. These up-and-coming musicians are blending music from different influences and showcasing their own twist of Afrofusion at such events as Jahazi.

The event will be held at the Michael Joseph Centre, courtesy of Safaricom. It will feature Lele Ngoma (an eclectic band popular at poetry events) and Spotlight on Kenyan music finalist, Fadhilee. Both acts have shared the stage with popular musicians like Aaron Rimbui, The Villagers Band, Winyo and even (for Fadhilee the Jazz crooner) gone out of the country on tours.

“This year we are going all the way,” said Koech Kevin Lele Ngoma band leader who also doubles as the guitarist. The Children Sickle Cell Anaemia foundation is also using the event to create awareness on a disease that has for long been taken as a paedriatic disease. Information on this disease is lacking in the public domain and as they publicise the concert they hope to start a conversation on it as well.

Bitings and drinks will be served and the hosts promise secure parking for their fans and other live music enthusiasts.

Exhibition: Value by Tahir Karmali, Feb. 27 – Mar. 13 2014 @ Kuona Trust

Value
Kuona Trust is delighted to announce the opening of ‘VALUE’, an exhibition by Tahir Karmali, opening on 27th February running through to 13th March 2014.

Tahir’s photography installation, presents a series of provocative images, tastefully used to communicate and express a specific understanding the artist has of ‘Value’.

The artist chooses to use a subject that is laced with cultural and societal taboo. More specifically, Male Sex Workers (MSW) in Nairobi, who continue to present a provocative subject with traces of homosexual implications and male role stereotypes. This exhibition is not simply a display of those in the sex industry, but an active force in articulating, shaping, and contesting the meaning of ‘Value’ in the public sphere.

About the Artist
Tahir Carl Karmali is a Nairobi based photographer and digital & mixed media artist. He started his career in the corporate world but has been constantly in touch with the creative industry, constantly exploring the philosophies of existentialism whether through ink on canvas or the camera lens.
