Remade in Kenya, Haute Couture Recycled Functional Art Exhibition by Walied Osman

About
Afghan-American multi-media artist, Walied Osman, exhibits an array of artwork that are a deconstruction and reconstruction of old airplanes and cars. Recycling is central to his work. Quoting from the French chemist/biologist Antoine Lavoisier’s famous maxim: ‘Nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything is transformed,’ which was in turn borrowed from Greek philosopher Anaxagoras of Clazomenae, Walied’s artworks blend aesthetics with functionality and practicality, dramatically transforming scrap materials into unique haute couture functional art. The artist also addresses current events through his pieces, using the power of art to explore human follies.

Walied studied electrical engineering in the USA. His exposure to art came from working in the art-moving business connecting with museums, galleries, collectors and artists from around the world. He moved to Kenya in 2012 and was introduced to a Kenyan Italian lady, who kindly granted him access to her late husband’s warehouse full of old disused aircraft at Wilson Airport. This was the beginning of a fulfilling journey, the results of which will grace the Alliance Française galleries in May.

Interested in exploring how to transform public spaces into pleasant, welcoming and interactive places, contributing on how to up-scale and replicate small scale public spaces improvement initiatives, and shaping the citywide vision for public places? Then join us as we take this conversation a notch higher.

This will be the climax of a Placemaking Design Lab which runs from May 4th-8th. At the Lab, 3 international and local expert teams will be challenged to develop placemaking strategies for 3 public spaces in the following areas: the city centre, a residential neighbourhood – Dandora and an informal settlement – Korogocho.

The Lab is part of the ‘Making Cities Together’ project – a year-long international knowledge exchange & platform about Placemaking & Public Spaces.

2. Short intervention about Nairobi’s public spaces and the Lab’s contribution
3. Presentation of Placemaking Strategies by the teams
4. Selection of the winning concept
5 Cocktail

The project is initiated by the International New Town Institute, the International Federation of Housing and Planning and Placemakers in close collaboration with Nairobi City County, UN-Habitat, Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, private sector, DASUDA, UoN, TU-K, Kuwa among other local stakeholders.

About
The Rhino Charge is an annual event organized to raise funds for the Rhino Ark Charitable Trust. This year the event is to be held on the 31st of May. The Rhino Charge is a Kenyan off-road event in which competitors drive between scattered check points over approximately 100 square kilometers of very rough terrain within a 10 hour period. Navigation is by compass/GPS and the winner is the competitor who visits all check points in the shortest distance (GPS measured) (www.rhinocharge.co.ke).

Brandon Barbour has been involved in the Rhino Charge for 3 years with the team of Car no 53 which was placed 3rd overall in 2014. This year he is entering in Car No 57 a 1990 Suzuki rebuilt especially for this event. Together with the famous DJ Mikhail Kuzi, they organize a fundraiser beach party to sponsor the car and contribute to support the Rhino Ark on Saturday 9th Mayat Forty Thieves Beach Bar, all you have to do is come to party on the beach, pay KES 500/- at the gate. All proceeds from the gate will go to the car #57.
