Once every year, the TED experience comes to our city at the TEDxNairobi event. This year’s TEDxNairobi will be held on December 6th at the Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA) in Karen. The event will run from 9:30 am to 6:00 pm. This is a registration-only event strictly limited to 500 participants, so please register today.

TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design – three areas that are collectively shaping the cutting edge of our horizons. The fascinating and passionate TEDTalks have reached over a billion views through ted.com, enlightening audiences worldwide with their powerful ideas. TEDxNairobi operates under a license from TED and is a self-organized event that creates a platform for international and local speakers to bring the TED experience to Nairobi.

In this our fifth year, we have decided to provoke more complex conversations with some brilliant minds by using the theme of “A WasTED World?!” Because the challenge of reducing waste is now intrinsically linked to the challenge of increasing prosperity in developing countries. We are looking for new ways to transform the cycles that define our lives, in order to upgrade or redesign systems that support our rapidly changing world.

About
Joseph was born in the Village of Ngecha in 1976, where most Kenyan artists have their roots. However after attaining school age, his parents moved to Lari division in Kiambu where he attended both primary and secondary school. Cartoon started drawing when he was still in primary school, art and crafts being his favourite subject besides history and agriculture. While in primary school, Cartoon studied art and crafts for nearly 6 years, though he never continued with it as a subject in secondary school due to the lack of Art in the syllabus.

After completing his secondary education, he met artist Shine Tani on his way to his uncle’s house and It is through him that Cartoon’s talent in art was revived again. Through his guidance and mentoring he introduced Cartoon to Gallery Watatu in 1994 where the late Ruth Scheffner purchased three of his paintings.

Since then, cartoon has grown as a talented artist and has so far participated in 50 group exhibitions both locally and internationally. He has also had over 8 solo exhibitions in Kenya and overseas. Apart from exhibitions, Cartoon’s work has been featured in local and international magazines and books. In 2001 he won a prestigious art award through ROSL- Overseas League and travelled for a 1 month residency in Scotland and 3 week travelling exhibition in London and Edinburgh. Over 160 paintings have been collected by individual art collectors and companies in the last 10 years of his art career.

Since 1996, Cartoon has participated in Art Action and Expiation in Northern Ireland, which is held yearly to raise funds to cater for schools around the slums in Nairobi. Over 500 children benefit from this project.
The drive behind the passion in Cartoon’s heart is to see Kenyan and African art exhibited worldwide and artists free to express themselves globally.

This will be an absolutely unique opportunity to develop your sculpting skills from one of Zambia’s most recognized sculptors,Tom Phiri. This 4 days intensive workshop is a beginner’s class in stone sculpting and does not require previous knowledge in sculpture.

About the artist
Tom Phiri is Kuona Trust’s current artist in residence. Phiri launched his artistic career in 2003 and is one of the founding members of a group of stone sculptors going by the name Roots of Xpression, currently based in Lusaka. Find more information more here.

A note for a SmileA Note for a Smile: Music & Art to raise humanitarian aid for Palestinians in Gaza

The six-week conflict this summer left more than 1,870 dead and thousands injured, homeless, and traumatized. The conflict had a particularly devastating toll on Gaza’s youngest and most vulnerable. Many of the affected children have suffered serious injuries that cannot be treated in Gaza due to limited medical capacity caused by the ongoing blockades, and others suffer from severe traumatic disorders. They need our solidarity and support.

A group of us working in various humanitarian and development capacities in Nairobi have decided to organize a charity event to encourage the community to contribute to the work of Palestinian health institutions to restore dignity and hope to the Palestinians in Gaza.

All funds raised during the evening will go towards supporting the activities of Makassed Hospital in Jerusalem, as well as to the Gaza Mental Health Community Center.

During the event we will hold a silent art auction showcasing a number of world-class artists from the contemporary East African art scene, who have kindly contributed their work to raising funds for this cause. The impressive line-up of artists includes Fitsum Behre Woldelibanos, Eltayeb Dawelbait, Michael Soi, Anthony Okello, Paul Onditi, Shabu Mwangi, John Silver, Justus Kyalo, Dennis Muraguri, Yassir Ali Mohammed, Mariantonietta Peru and Kamal Shah.

There will be music throughout the night with live sets from some of the best musicians in Nairobi who have accepted to perform for the cause, including Idd Aziz, Teto, Jahm, Afro Simba and Mutinda.

Designers’ fair (featuring Otenge, Chilly Mango, Madafu Moxie); a raffle with a chance to win exciting prizes; food and drinks (cash-bar), and more surprises await you…

Please note that your ticket number will be your registration number for the art auction.
Bids will be open from 17:00 to 21:00!
