‘RASKIN & FLEISCHMANN’ – Piano & Violin

The Embassy of Austria presents the Austrian-Belgian duo Raskin & Fleischmann, Ambassadors for the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ programme ‘New Austrian Sound of Music’ 2014-2015. Pianist Philippe Raskin is winner of several international piano competitions and performs regularly as part of chamber groups and as a soloist with orchestras in Europe, Asia, Africa and the United States. Johannes Fleischmann made his solo debut of the Brahms Violin Concerto with the Austrian-Slovakian Philharmonic Orchestra at the Wiener Konzerthause (Vienna Concert Hall). He continues to perform as soloist and chamber musician in Festivals and with celebrated orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna Symphonic.

ABOUT: SILENT CONVERSATION
My work embodies my interest in socio-economic situations in life, while at the same time trying to provoke thoughts that are driven towards the judgment of these situations. I consider my paintings as a platform for conversation from within an individual or between two or more people. My main subject is human, with a kin interest in their emotions as expressed in their eyes.

My sources of Inspiration are endless. I am deeply interested in children and women as I see them both as vessels and sources of life. I have a keen interest on world religions and arts. I take my time to look and try to understand the different visual languages employed by artists from different parts of the world

SILENT CONVERSATION is a collection of portrait paintings of women trying to create a dialogue between the viewer and the ‘paintings’, the paintings, I consider them thought provoking and commands attention.

Though not quite detailed, the portraits silently holds the attention of the viewer. It is said that eyes are the windows to the soul, the main outstanding feature of the portraits is the eyes, they are dark and looks directly to the eyes of the viewer, this creates an emotional disturbance.

The exhibition interrogates the relationship between the artist, the art and the viewer, between what the society considers as beauty and ugly, sad and happy, stereotypes and judgment.

The exhibition will feature 25 portraits of different sizes all produced in 2014.

‘THE POWER OF COLLABORATION’ – An evening of film discussion by Light Box

Light Box is a human-centred, design-based Kenyan film production company. Its tagline is ‘to inspire and uplight a generation through film’.

It presents 3 recent productions: ‘Ririkana’ (Victims of PEV, forgotten by the public and politicians), ‘Let’s play pretend’ (a university girl discovers the depth of deception and betrayal, film written and developed by Moi University students) and ‘Christmas Morning’ (Christmas and Kevin’s 17th birthday. Kevin must decide what kind of a man he will become).

Salim Amin, son and only child of Mohamed “Mo” Amin, undertakes a journey of recollection and reflection into the life of the frequently absent, globe-trotting father he loved, revered and feared. In his late teens, Mohamed Amin abandons his studies to pursue a career in photography which, over the course of thirty years, will turn him into a front-line cameraman extraordinaire – and, arguably, the most renowned photojournalist of his era. Training his candid lens across continents, Mo Amin’s thirst for breaking news puts him repeatedly in harm’s way – enduring weeks of torture, automatic arms fire, explosives and, ultimately, the amputation of his left arm – to become one of the most decorated news camera-man of all time. The documentary depicts Mo as an unbending, unforgiving and unapologetically rambunctious paterfamilias whose hunger for “the story” propels him to ever greater professional heights – often at the expense of those he cherishes. The 96-minute film is underpinned by extraordinary images from the vast Amin archive – currently available at World Picture Network in New York. The stills mark and frame Mo’s life as it unfolds in a vivid and, at times, grisly tableau of international politics.
