THE LAB will launch its new pop-up space with the solo show exhibition of Onyis Martin, In Conversation (Talking Walls) which will be open to the public from the 17th of December.Examining identity as an abstract metaphor influenced by consumerism in traditional and contemporary social constructs, the artist questions the methods through which marketing and advertising borrow from traditional gender roles, class and race to then market to an audience increasingly influenced by contemporary values. Appearing weathered by urban environments, some of the walls are covered in paper ads ranging from posters selling global brands to small, local intimate offerings of personal, medical and “voodoo” services. Subliminal messages alongside the phrases “Man Up”, “Security Video Recording”, “No Posters Allowed” portray heightened tensions and changes in society and cultural codes in a fast developing economy.
Informed by his surroundings, Onyis’ paintings transcend their specificity and are representative of shifting contemporary and traditional values witnessed daily in rapidly urbanising spaces.

Mary Ogembo’s paintings are rich with vibrant Earth colors that bring about the state of the African environment. She is inspired by the African woman and applies unconventional, engaging and fun concepts that overlook the negative stereotype placed on the African woman.Ogembo is a kenyan born artist who has been working as a full time artist since 1998. She is currently based at the GoDown Arts centre in Nairobi. 2005, she won commonwealth arts and craft award, worked in Ghana as a resident artist for a period of six months at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. Her work has been widely recognized by local media in Kenya and other countries including, South African broadcasting cooperation, Featuring Africa Within, CNN Inside Africa 2011 and others.
Collected by: The National Art Gallery of Zimbabwe, The Standard Chartered bank UK and Casoria museum in Italy have collected her work.
Exhibitions: Kenya, France, USA, Egypt, Canada, Finland, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Tanzania, Zambia, India, Germany, Lithuania and Abu Dhabi.
_______________________________________Dickens George Otieno’s (B.1979) practice is driven by the search to find meaning and worth in things that seem otherwise useless. Otieno weaves large sculptural fabrics and makes cloth sculpture from discarded drink cans which he collects from local kiosks near his home and studio. He compares the shredded cans to palm leaves which have been used traditionally for weaving through many generations and civilizations.
Clothing is important because apart from covering the body, it is also a statement about the person through the different designs of color, material and even the patterns printed on them which reflects the time and the world today.

Kim, Sung-Jin was born in South Korea on 16th December 1954. He graduated from the department of ceramic arts at Dankook University (M.F.A)He has held 20 solo exhibitions including the Invitation Artists of Korea Individual Design Exhibition he is also a member of Korea Art Association, Korea Contemporary Ceramic Association and Korea Craft Council.
He is currently undertaking a one year programme as a resident professor in the Department of Fine Art and Design at Kenyatta University teaching ceramics

Nuru Bahati Shukrani’s fine hands introduces to the world a man whose heart is a child. His unswerving dedication and wit construct surreal imagery that evokes emotions in people. In this phenomenal collection he has managed to reflect a diverse range of artistic pursuits engineered to bring one’s brain to task.
Each of us sees the world differently. And often, what’s in your mind is what you see first. Our connection to the earthliness of being human by nature fetches our emotional nuclei to one root; love. Hence Nuru Bahati’s perceptive stab.This exhibition was first released to the public on 4th September, this year on his 33rd birthday in an online exhibition – probably the first of its kind in Kenya.
PEOPLE CHANGE, is an exhibition surpassing present times while traversing the past to today. It’s work of art that offers personal interpretation, creativity and intuitive experience.
A world constantly battling the consequences of poor human decisions needs people with knack and skill to help it heal. That highly depends on our consciousness; the power and will to hearken to the intricate motion of events, of ourselves, of nature and energy. It is only by seeing beyond physical orientation can we renew mind and spirit – to comprehend what lies within.
Sail in thought through this striking assortment. The artist insists he did not name the pieces so as not to limit anyone’s imagination. Thank God for the freedom, because it gives you a chance to interact with his material from an untailored point of view. Whatever you interpret could mean something that awakes you. You are encouraged to free yourself through this.
Natively from Mombasa and practising his craft in Nairobi, Kenya, Nuru hopes to help each person converse inwardly with self at the meeting of PEOPLE CHANGE.
The title was inspired by the strangeness and mystery of humanity. Indeed what we have made of this world astounds.
