SYNOPSIS
The nation of Kenya has existed from before there was a flag. Now, as we come up to our fiftieth year since independence, we celebrate our nation, our diversity, our drama, our love, and our cultures. We sing the songs that have made us happy, and celebrate each decade and each life that was in our proud nation.
Join us in a journey that is written in a narrative style and follows many different lives as they chase the future…

Without music, the story of Kenya is incomplete .Our determination, resilience, failures and conquests are captured in the songs we sing and dance to. Generations come and go but their music lives forever. Kenya
at 50 is a love story. Love between people who wade through the murky waters of politics, deception and betrayal. Together they rise but casualties cannot be avoided. Some just love but others just love to hate. The one thing everybody seems to love is song , dance and music . As they age together with their nation to reach the golden age at 50 they know from deep within their hearts,” MY LAND IS KENYA”.

To the audience, we encourage you to sing along if you know the song… and encourage you to dance as well. And spoiler alert…we make fun of ourselves and our culture but it is all in good fun.

Synopsis
In a plantation there is usually the illusion of an idyllic farming group. However, beneath its deceptive exterior, the Chola’s plantation is everything but calm. The Cholas are uptight and feel entitled to the land and the people that work their land. The farm workers have little or no rights, until one of them becomes a lawyer, and their re-education begins. Then the unthinkable happens – he falls in love with his family’s masters’ daughter. What follows is a dramatic musical adventure full of humor and tragedy.

This is the story of Rohio & Juliet, a Kenyan story loosely based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the classical romantic tragedy. The musical aptly tackles issues most pressing to Kenyans. As we gear towards elections these are issues that we cannot afford to ignore and this dramatic musical puts a mirror in front of us with full doses of laughter, excitement, choreographed dance and original music by the Mamlaka Hill Chapel Drama team. The musical captures the true issues that we continually face us Kenyans, and which most people will readily relate. Rohio & Juliet delivers a powerful message in a truly unique theatrical performance that is bound to leave us all with the potent choice – love or war?

A Citizen’s Festival on elections and leadership presented by Alliance Française in partnership with INFORM Action, The XYZ Show, Picha Mtaani & Dan ‘Chizi’ Aceda

This multidisciplinary festival will tackle issues of unity and diversity, corruption and impunity, land issues and reform, governance and leadership with critical eyes and voices, through the mediums of editorial cartoons, XYZ puppets, ‘Kenya Burning’ photographs, music and performing arts, documentaries and public service announcements.
Cartoons by leading Kenyan cartoonists and ‘Kenya Burning’ photographs by Boniface Mwangi will graphically illustrate the path that must be avoided.

A series of short documentaries by ‘INFORM Action’ that specializes in film and community discussions, led by Maina Kiai, former Chairman of the Kenya National Human Rights Commission and UN Special Rapporteur on the Freedom of Assembly and of Association, will engage Kenyans on the persistent need to demand political and social accountability.

Skits and voice talents from the XYZ show together with musicians and comedians including Dan ‘Chizi’ Aceda, Winyo and Larry Asego will use their artistic expressions to emphasize the essence of the festival.

The Kenya Conservatoire of music warmly invites you to this year’s musical: Seventeen.

The creative team is led by well known Kenyan composer and performer Mrs. Nancy Day, who has written the book and arranged most of the music. You will also recognize some of the contributors to this project, who are also renowned performers in Nairobi such as Charles Ouda and Mkamzee Mwatela.

The musical tells of a high school bully who…… come and sees the rest!!! Let’s just say that “things are not always as they seem.’’ The musical styles are so varied, that everyone will find something close to their heart. There is Tango and Taarab, Ragga and “R & B,” Jazz, Ballads, Funk – all accompanied by the Conservatoire Orchestra. With all these musical genres, you are sure to be tapping your feet to the rhythm and indulging your eyes in the absolutely energetic dancing.

Advance tickets will be available from Monday 10th December and there will be a seating map of the venue available for one to pick there preferred seat.

Kenyan Musical: Shungwaaya, Sep 16 2012 @ National Museum

The Theatre Company presents Shungwaaya  – an original Kenya Musical based on African Cultures , beliefs and taboos highlighting on the integrity of leadership, misuse of power and its influence on the unity of the society. It fuses modern performance techniques with traditional East African performance styles and the story is told through drama music and dance.

SYNOPSIS
Shungwaaya is a mythical, musical theatre piece that tells the story of a community that faces the timeless challenges of individual greed, envy and lust as they struggle to form a society where people can live together harmoniously. The show is created through a mythical combination of the ancient cultures of East Africa, where a community is united, guided and tested by spiritual powers which are gifted to the people through chosen shamans  or healers.

The play shows the initiation of a chosen one, Mwejuma, in the river, whom is handed the calabash which guards the ancestral spirits; a calabash which holds the powers of the spirits which protect and guide the community During the performance, we  experience wrestling contests to choose community leaders; rituals that cleanse families and households, and the downfall of greedy men which brings calamities to their families. Young people fall in love and marry, betray and reconcile. The environment is an active character in the performance, being intricately connected with the community.

The story is told through powerful songs, dances and dialogue in the languages of East Africa, and also uses the kanga which brings color and beauty into the piece.
Shungwaaya has been created collectively by the members of the Performance Training and Development Programme in 2012. Three groups created the short performances Leaving Shungwaaya, Kukicha and Mwiba, which have been combined through TTC’s unique style to form the piece you will see.

The current production features Liz Enane, Hilary Namanjia, Dembede Mido, Squich Musau, Sylvia Namusassi, Carolyn Mutua and John Wasonga with Izzo Anyanga on percussion.

Choreography by Kitt Nyang’aya Kiarie and Musical Arrangments by Wafula Mukasa.

Kuruka maisha Foundation wishes to invite all for our long awaited Musical TUNARUKA TUKILALA on the 24th and 25th February 2012,live and exclusive at Oshwal Centre westlands Nairobi.

The show is the first grande acrobatic dance musical  ever created to depict the story of street children in Nairobi. The stage production, entitled TUNARUKA TUKILALA, follows the lives of young men and women who end up living on our urban streets,have to survive there, and eventually find a way out. The show is performed by children and young adults who have experienced life on the streets firsthand but have been rehabilitated through the arts. Now, using their passion, talent, and skills, they share with us a spectacular story in which beauty triumphs over adversity.The Show also features as part of an ongoing Documetary film project Ni KURUKA MAISHA whose filming is already ongoing.

The Stage prodcution is writen by an American conceptual artist Yazmany Arboleda and directed Nick Balongo with an original score by acclaimed composer Nina Ogot.

The Foundation will also be using the event to launch its Education Fund to support identified street youths to continue with their Formal Education.40% of the proceeds from ticket sales will be channelled towards the Foundation Education programme.
